Should Obama Pick Hillary for VP?

Louisa Burgess
Tonight I listened to Senator Clinton speak in New York City after winning the South Dakota Primary by a huge margin. A smiling Bill and Chelsea Clinton at her side. Then I listened to Senator Obama speak to supporters in St. Paul after winning the Montana Primary. Followed by a bunch of pundits on Fox5 expounding on what Obama should do about picking a Vice President. It wasn't very interesting.

Even the Republican pundits who admitted disliking Clinton for VP and who could come up with a couple of inane reasons she shouldn't be the Democrat's choice for Vice President, wound up admitting that it was his best choice. Oh they mentioned a few governors that could be of help, the guy from West Virginia and another from Pennsylvania. Both of those states were won by Hillary Clinton in the Democratic Primaries. But they shrugged at those mentions, as if to say, "boring."

One fellow who's name is escaping me now, but who is African-American, came right out and said, Clinton would bring the most "excitement" to the race. Karl Rove practically drooled over the possibilities, but not for any positive reason. Let's face it, the man likes a good fight.

Obama himself didn't use the words Vice President when he mentioned Senator Clinton. However, he was gushing like a school boy in heat when he congratulated her on running a great primary race. His tone wasn't the slightest bit conciliatory when he spoke of change in Washington; changes like Universal Health Care. He stated emphatically that when we accomplish this tremendous reform, and we will he said, Senator Clinton will be central to achieving that goal. Honestly, he went on about how wonderful and courageous and smart Hillary Clinton is for a nice chunk of his speech. His supporters were jubilant in response.

Let's examine the situation further. Clinton it was pointed out tonight, won all the states that are needed to win to win the Presidential election in the fall. Florida, California, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, New Hampshire, Ohio, the so called swing states. She ended the primary race ahead of Obama in the popular vote. If it weren't for the travesties in Michigan and Florida, Hillary Clinton would have locked up the nomination, not Barack Obama.

While he may not be the most experienced pickle in the jar, the man is no fool. It doesn't take a Harvard education to know that he has to do something to appease the disenfranchised Clinton supporter. He must surely know that he needs the votes of those miners and truck drivers and minimum wage workers who voted for Clinton. One commentator tonight mentioned that the Clinton "twofer" might be a deterrent to choosing Hillary for the Vice Presidential candidate. One wonders what planet that fellow has been living on.

If Obama chooses her, will Clinton accept? I sure hope so. But she has the choice to accept or to decline and either negotiate for a cabinet post, or remain simply one of the hardest workers in the Senate.

Obama on the other hand has little choice. Let's see, the Governor of a swing state who's name escapes us, or Hillary Clinton, winner of the popular vote in the Democratic Primary season, champion of change and household name? Like I said, there's little choice.

I think American politics are getting more and more like the WWE every day! They hate each other in the ring, but are buddies in the locker room. Just more sleight of hand; smoke and mirrors.

Interesting comments here. Momma J, you are referring to Bill Richardson, the Gov. of N.M. he abandoned the Clinton's sinking ship and jumped aboard Obama's. That should say something about Richardson'e character...but I'm starting to see a pattern develop during this VERY important election..and that is character & judgement is taking a back seat to who can sell more tickets at the box office..and we all know hands down Barack Obama the pop star is the main attraction. Value, patriotism, judgement & character are foriegn concepts this round.

Pen, I think I would rather have Clinton giving out the hallway pass to the bathroom than Cheny any day :)

Corrected typo : Very interesting article ! I wanted to see her as the nominee. Since she did not get the nomination but still got more popular vote, she has every reason expect that slot. She has proved herself. If she gets to be the VP pick, it will be because of her strength and not that Obama will do her a favor. He will need her for his own benefit. He needs to win and her strong supporters will help him achieve that....and talking about going even to the bathroom with the VP's permission, aren't we all used to that by now ?

Well, I sincerely believe that if the tables were turned that there would be no way that Hillary would offer Obama the VP post. I picture her telling Bill to ask that nice young colored boy to leave and not let the door hit him in the rear on his way out. Power is all that she wants, to heck with the "party". She would be a lousy choice for him, I mean, it's like would you want your mother in law as your office assistant taking care of every little detail. She would be in on everything. The guy would have to get permission to go to the bathroom. If he selects her, the he is the fool. His presidency, if he gets it, would not be his own.

Great article! I think if they want a democrat for president they might want to put Hillary on the ticket. I believe Obama chose someone else and for the life of me his name escapes me. He was a heavy set, I believe bearded politician that had something to do with the Spanish speaking community, and I want to say he was from New Mexico? maybe. Anyway he supported Clinton and then he turned to Obama and I think he was actually said to be one of the choices for V.P. I'm betting he's the one they are thinking of putting on the ticket. And God I hope I'm wrong because I will vote for the lesser of two evils and just go Republican because I already know what type of crap we will be in for. I left my courage in my other pants.
