Should Paternity Tests Be Made Mandatory?

Lorraine Hayden
On any given weekday, millions of people are tuned in to hear Maury Povich say those five little words that have become a staple in modern American pop culture; "You are NOT the father!" We may find the show entertaining but we must remember that these children in question are the products of dysfunctional adults and the pawns in a sick ratings race by the shows producers. When it comes down to it, these children are the ones who will suffer in the long run. Nothing beneficial can come out of the display of a young mother testing 5 or more men to determine who fathered her baby, this is something that will have a long lasting effect on the child.

The Maury Povich Show does raise the question: should paternity testing be mandatory? If there is a requirement of paternity testing before the man signs the birth certificate, it would cut down on alot of future heartache. For example, the father and his loved ones will not be in for the shock of their lives when they find out that the child that they cared for, loved and financially supported for 18 years is not theirs. Also this gives some women the chance take more responsibility for their actions. No longer will lies be able to hurt so many lives in the long run.

It is unfair that a man has to pay for a child that is not his, regardless of paternity a husband is still required by law to support the children conceived during the marriage.

So often were hear about women rights, and dead beat dads BUT what about the men who want to be responsible and do the right thing? Where are the rights for these men? Along with mandatory paternity testing their should be a mandatory law stating that the woman should pay back the child support she received over how ever long period the time due to the fact that the child/children are not his.

What it all boils down too is both parties needing to take responsibility for their actions. Women have to be more cautious in deciding who they have sex with and of course use birth control. The same goes for men, when you practice safe sex you will not encounter the so called baby momma drama. Here's a reminder in case you forgot: CONDOMS ARE NOT ONLY USED FOR PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF DISEASES! They are also crucial in preventing unwanted pregnancies.

Here are a few resources for the rights of men regarding the issues of paternity:

    Neofeminism is absolutely disgusting.

Now they wan't children to have no rights. Unreal.

-Child goes from cradle to grave not knowing his/ her true lineage and ancestry.

-Diminished health care not knowing factual risk factors from biological parents.

These pigs almost NEVER mention the ultimate injustice is to the children. They just flap their gums with no intellectual honesty.

They just want what they want...and that's it. Right or wrong.

A CHILD'S right to know trumps all.

A man has a right to know if a child is really his, and before a mother can even APPLY for govt support for a child she should be required to provide a list of likely suspects for a paternity test so that the true father can be identified and held responsible. Neither of the biological parents nor the child have any claim on other people's money. Testing should improve people's behavior considerably.

Interesting topic but it will probably never happen. At the same time, there are a lot of questions that come up. If DNA testing becomes mandatory, would that create a national DNA database? And from that would Insurance companies or Employers have the right to look at it and then deny you because they see that you have a 30% chance of developing cancer in the next 15 years. Also, in the case of Chimeras (an exceptionally rare condition in which a person has 2 different genetic profiles due to embryos fusing in the womb), DNA testing won't work.

Also, it's not just "lower economic scale" and "unmarried" people who have questions with paternity. I believe estimates are that 1 in 4 children born in wedlock are not actually the husband's child. My mother, who is a registered nurse, saw it all the time with DNA testing to see if a father would be a good donor for bone marrow. Often the results came back that there was simply no possible way for the husband to be the father.

I think it's a great idea who's time has come. I really can't understand why anyone could think that knowing the truth is wrong. The only reason someone could have to be against this would be if they had something to hide. I'm hapilly married and when we decide to have a kid, we'll be having a DNA test at birth. My wife agrees andis just fine with it, because she will have nothing to hide.

to Roselyn James: The cost would not be so astronomical as you may think. If mandatory DNA testing were implimented for every live birth, then the market principle of supply and demand would drive the prices down, because of the sheer number of tests being done. If this was implimented nationwide, the price of a DNA test could possibly get down to the point where it would cost more to fill your gas tank. It would also cause the companies that do this type of testing to expand, and new ones would open, and create some jobs.

paternity test should not be mandatory. Women should be responsible and not have unprotected sex w/ strangers and at least be in a committed relationship before she decides to give birth to a child. B/C most guys who refuse paternity tests are married men who cheat on the side or losers who never wanted to committ in a relationship anyway. Women need to think of the consequences before she decides to have sex with anyone. Besides some women get pregnant ON PURPOSE to trap men therefore it is their problem. Men should not be held accountable.

I can't wait til that day comes. It will keep men from DENYING and women from LYING about the paternity of the child (who suffers the most!!) It may stir some arguemnts in certain relationships but it's time for men to wake up! Not all women are honest and faithful these days!

I can't believe they still air the same topic after all these years. It's disheartening to watch. You make a good point. I know a man this happened to and it was devastating. It's certainly something that needs to be addressed, but the cost of required paternity tests would be astronomical.
