Should Sarah Palin Be Held Responsible for Her Daughter's Pregnancy?

Jordan Smith
Republican presidential candidate John McCain has dropped a bomb. He has announced Sarah Palin as his running mate for the vice-presidential position of the United States. Mrs. Palin is the Governor of Alaska. I must admit this was really the talk of the country as we watched history being made again. I must say this was a very strategic plan considering her qualifications.

We have already had the Republican Convention and as we know Gov. Palin life-public and private is under the microscope and will be plucked apart. It has been made public that Palin teenage daughter is unwed and pregnant. It has been stated that Gov. Palin made this information available to McCain and his campaign committee prior to accepting the position. McCain did not think that it would have any specific bearing on the campaign or his running mate.

Palin has since replied that her daughter Bristol is pregnant and she is glad that her daughter has decided to keep the baby. Considering that Governor Palin is against abortion. Palin has also stated that her daughter will have to grow up a little faster now. It has been stated that her daughter will marry the baby's father who has been named as Levi. This seemed to have placed a dark shadow over the convention.

Should Governor Palin be held responsible for her teenage unwed daughter being in the family way?

Many of us raise our children to the best of our abilities and all we can do is talk to them, teach them, pray for them and live a wholesome life for them to see and hope that they will make the best decisions possible. Yes, they will stumble, they will make mistakes. We did too. However we should not place Governor Palin on the trail because her daughter is pregnant. This is the real world and things happen.

She should not be held responsible or ridiculed because her daughter is pregnant out of wed-lock. I'm sure she has probably discussed with Bristol the consequences of having unprotected sex and sex out of wed-lock.

I must say that I was very proud of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's response. He was asked how does he feel about the situation? He stated that he was also the product of a teenage mother and that our families especially our children should be off limits. I think that he handled that very well no doubt he is mindful that he too has two daughters as well and you never know what the future holds.

On the same side of this token I can only image what people would have said if it was one of Barack's daughters. This would have really been turned into a circus.

I'm not sure of the situation between Bristol and Levi but I feel that they should not get married just because she is pregnant. The pregnancy transition alone will be trying and difficult for the both of them. Moving forward with marriage is even a bigger step and they should not be married unless both of them are ready for the work and compromise that comes along with marriage. There is no need to add more fuel to the fire especially if they are not ready to commit to each other.

No, we should not place Governor Palin on trial because her daughter is pregnant. We must stay focus and realize that there are other issues at hand that should be addressed, such as our failing economy, our troops that need to come home, health care issues, real estates issues, etc. Palin should be able to deal with her private and family life just as everyone else should.

Let's get on with the race to the White House.
