Montrealers who have serious acne can get an referral from their family doctor for a dermatologist in their area, or they choose to visit a private clinic and pay for the services rendered.

When the acne is severe you will need to get a referral from your family doctor for a dermatologist. It would be wise to be prepared so jot down important information in advance.

Write down any questions you might want to ask your doctor so that you don't forget.

  • You will want to know what the treatment will be
  • If there are side affects, especially if you are pregnant or have other medical conditions
  • If there are alternative medications and treatments
  • How long to take the medication and how safe they will be
  • When to expect improvement
  • If you should schedule a follow-up appointment
  • If it is safe to cease taken prescribed medication is not working
  • Are there any self-care procedures to follow such as a change in diet, over-the-counter-medication changes, changes in soaps, lotions, or contraceptives

Be prepared to answer the doctors questions as well such as:

  • When did you first noticed the acne
  • Can you thing of anything that triggers the acne, such as your menstrual period, stress or eating certain foods, using certain makes or substances on your skin.
  • Are your menstrual cycles normal
  • Are you pregnant or are you thinking about getting pregnant in the near future
  • What soaps, and lotions or lubricants are you currently using
  • how deeply emotionally is your acne affecting your self-esteem and your social life
  • Is there a family history of acne
  • what medications and or home remedies have you already tried
