Should I Separate My Seasonal Clothing?

Are You Organized Enough to Know Where Your Bathing Suit Is?

M.R Charette
Do I separate seasonal clothing? Do I organize clothing between the cold and the hot months twice a year? Are my seasonal clothing items tagged, bagged and easy to locate?

Should I? Would I? Should I rewash, use a lovely scented fabric softener, iron, and have the satisfaction of hours of organization?

Of course I do not. There are three reasons I don't do this task. And my reasoning is not necessarily in order of importance.

The first reason is that I only have two closets in my house. I am married to a carpenter and my house has not finished the original planned remodeling since I moved in nine years ago. My car, however, runs like a top because he doesn't spend all his working hours on mechanics.

The closets I do have are small, and have a rod and one shelf. They are organized as well as possible but space in these small closets is at a premium. In fairness, I am pretty handy with tools myself and have not improved the storage space in my home either. My lame excuse is that he could design and build something in less than half the time it takes me.

My second reason is that I presently know where things are. Actually, that is a total fib but it sounded good. My bureaus are overflowing and sometimes I may find something akin to brand new, I simply forgot it was buried at the bottom of a drawer.

My third reason is that I am domestically challenged. Okay, that is also a fib. The truth is that it just is seasonal clothing separation and it is not a priority with me. I can hear June Cleaver gasping after reading that. Along with my mother in law.

After more than twenty five years together my husband still mentions seasonal clothing separation. HIS mommy does it, you know. He was born and raised in Quebec and you can eat off the floors at his mom's house. They are quite tidy and neat from every house I have visited in Quebec. At least the subject of summer and winter clothing has become an offhand remark more than a statement at this point in time. It secretly mortifies him that there is crap under the couch cushions occasionally. And we won't even discuss dog fur dust balls that are seemingly ever present.

I am not a slovenly, disgusting housekeeper. I simply have other things going on in my life. Would I like bigger closets, cedar lined, and enough room to actually separate winter and summer clothing? Sure, it would be nice but in the big picture it is a non issue with me. Hey, my chicken coop is kept clean. I earn a living and I have fun. Separate seasonal clothing when I could spend the time with friends canoeing? I think not.

It would a motivational challenge even if I had the room (and knew where the iron was).

I do this, too. I put winter clothes away. Good article.

I do separate my seasonal clothing, and it is a pain. Good article.

Organization is a good thing. I should partake of a little! My wife and I are the odd couple. The double odd couple. She's organized to a fault, and I am disorganized. Yet, I put things away, and she's not as good at that. Funny...

Good advice. There is nothing worse than wanting to go to the beach/pool and not being able to find anything to wear.

I'm so with you on this one, I simply do not have the time to separate seasonal clothing and still don't know where the iron is! cheers :)
