Should Sexual Identity Be Taught in School

Since the title does not identify what level of school, I will assume it to be directed at grammar school since these issues are already raised and taught at the upper levels. Schools should NOT be teaching this "sexual identity". First, there are much more important topics a child needs to learn and should not be subject to what can be an ambiguous term; distorted to mean sexual preference and not by its definition which is biologically rooted.

A child does not need a course to learn what sex they were born into. But, it can be abused to teach about "sexual identity" which is not a biological issue. It can be quite a subjective topic turned opinion causing confusion in a child who is expected to learn something that adults can't agree on. Also, the line between the terms "gender" and "sexual" depending upon the instructor is extremely thin, almost porous where a person can influence a child to their point of view by simply interchanging the terms making those terms synonymous.

As a result of confusing a child that way, you invite serious backlash from the parents. The media already send confusing messages about sexual and gender identity and should not be used as the excuse to teach "sexual" identity to children. Topics of gender identity and sexual preference which is the real topic should at least be left alone until high school where a child can at least make a decision for themselves and understand the differences in terminology.

In addition, such a course should never be made mandatory. Most importantly, while teaching the functions of the body is one thing, teaching unproven and controversial issues is something else regardless of your point of view. At what age will this begin and how? Would the topic "sexual identity" be treated equally as "sexuality education"? That would depend upon the school and the instructor. According to information on siecus.org, there are schools teaching sexual topics from kindergarten. Personally, it seems much of this education has only prompted kids to have sex, sexting and whatever else is going on at ages where sex wasn't a thought on my mind. I was too busy playing baseball or basketball or some sport.
