Martial arts are now more popular than ever especially thanks to the entertainment world and its focus on MMA. Many parents insist on getting their children into MMA at a young age, usually too young as they begin boxing classes at possibly six or seven years old. Although the children may learn to become skillful boxers and fighters, they aren't necessarily learning self-control to use their skills for the right reasons and instead end up replacing the bullies they trained to defend themselves against.
Many traditional tae kwon do schools do teach humility and respect for all people as part martial arts curriculum. But many modern boxing gyms simply teach techniques and make no judgment on what they should be used for. It can be a very big mistake to take children to an environment like this. Also many of the professional athletes and combat sports like boxing and MMA do not humbly represent themselves or their abilities, but rather use them as a means to brag about their achievements and their toughness.
When encouraging children to enter a martial art, be sure does for the right reasons and be sure that they are learning more than just how to fight. In fact, for a young child the part of learning how to fight is less important than understanding what it is they are training for. Be sure to teach them first and foremost that their skills should be used for sport and only if necessary for self-defense, but never for showing off or to intimidate into getting something they want.
When choosing a gym or dojo for your child make sure it is a place that always takes safety first and never compromises anyone's well-being. A good school will not allow children under age 13 to have sparring classes and will focus only on training styles and getting them into shape. Many children also won't enjoy the taxing training routines as they aren't used to such physical challenge. If they aren't enjoying it, they simply won't be good students and it would be better if they invested that time developing other skills, like something they do enjoy.
