Should Taxes Be Raised on Sugary Beverages?

Government Mind Your Own Business

John Griffin
It touches me greatly the concern the federal government has over the health of Americans. I really do sleep better at night knowing they care so much about us, but with all do respect to the government fat cats, mind your own business!

It is unbelievable we are going to fall for this bait and switch routine yet again?! When are we going to stand up to these control freaks and stop allowing them to take over our lives? The government has no business telling us what we can and cannot drink let alone penalize us with yet another tax because they are supposedly concerned about our health.

The smoking issue was the same story. Suing the tobacco companies had very little to do with saving us from ourselves, but everything to do with expanding the big arm of government. When was the last time you saw an anti-smoking ad, a public service announcement or some entertainer, actor, or other influential person talk about the dangers of smoking? The settlements from the tobacco companies were used to form other government programs which had nothing to do with smoking.

I know some of you probably got all warm and fuzzy inside because the government did something positive with the funds from the evil tobacco companies. Some of you are probably tickled to death that a pack of cigarettes costs about $5.00 a pack. However, for all of you short-sided people out there, what do think the government is going to do with this new tax? If you think they will stop with a tax on sugary drinks, you're dreaming! They continually test us to see how much they can get away with; so far I bet they are even surprised at what suckers we have become.

This new tax has nothing to do with saving the health of Americans and everything to do with expanding government and its influence in our lives. Make no mistake ladies and gentlemen fat cat politicians on both sides of the aisle will support this tax because neither party has any regard for the U.S. Constitution nor for the freedoms and liberties the founding fathers envisioned for us.

We have to stand up to Washington and take responsibility for our own lives. If you decide to drink a six pack of Coke everyday, that is your decision. I would not advise anyone to do that, but it is not Washington's business nor should they be allowed to tax us on that Coke because they think they have the power to change our behavior. Remember ladies and gentlemen, these clowns work for us. They need to do what we say, not whatever they want. Just in case you haven't noticed lately, doing whatever they want has become their standard operating procedure.

There was almost zero support for the "banker bailout", they passed it anyway. There is very little support for "healthcare reform", yet the President is still trying to push it through Congress. They don't care what we think, they think they run this country and because we care more about reality television and sports, we have given them that power.

Thomas Jefferson said it best. "When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty."
