Forces you to eat healthy portions. Because of the nature of weight-loss surgery, you will have to eat smaller portions than you did before. This is a healthy way to eat, because the human body simply wasn't designed to take in large meals two or three times a day. It was designed to take in small meals four to eight times a day. In other words, we're supposed to snack (healthfully!) all day. Because weight-loss surgery involves the removal of part of the stomach or small intestine, or sectioning of part of the stomach so it cannot be used, the body can no longer take in large amounts of food.
Weight loss makes you healthier. Many people who suffer from obesity-related conditions such as heart disease find that their conditions improve following weight loss. Other conditions that may be improved are arthritis, gastric reflux and even sleep apnea.
Helps control diabetes. According to a recent article in Diabetic Living magazine, most weight-loss surgery patients with type 2 diabetes find that their blood glucose levels return to normal not long after surgery. In addition, the healthy diet that should accompany weight-loss surgery will help control your diabetes as well.
Weight loss, especially when it involves obese patients, isn't just a matter of looking better and feeling more physically comfortable in your own body, although those are certainly worth a fortune on their own. Your weight affects every aspect of your health - from joint trouble to sleep quality to sexual performance and emotional health. When you lose large amounts of weight, you cannot help but notice improvement in every area of your life.
If you are at least 80 pounds overweight and you don't think you can lose the weight without surgery, then by all means discuss weight-loss surgery with your doctor. Make sure you know how the surgery works, what it can do for you and what it can't. Make sure you know the risks as well so that you can make an informed decision about whether it is worth it for you. Only you can decide.
