Should the United States Postal Service Take Over the Census?

Some Lawmakers Make Fuss About ACORN Handling Census

If you're like me, you've recently had a census-taker at your door step asking you about your age, race, and if you have indoor plumbing. You may not be aware that the organization handling the census taking this decade is none other than ACORN. Yes, ACORN. Unless you were living under a rock WITH an acorn, you know that this organization came under fire during the 2008 presidential election. Indictments and allegations flew like feathers in a chicken coup during that time and many of us, including top government officials and conspiracy theorist alike, have not forgotten.

The government has allotted billions of dollars to ACORN to conduct the census taking, but some government officials think this is squirrely and that we should be finding alternative ways to gather the census. The correct census is important because depending on each states census, state represent ivies are chosen and money is allotted to each state based on their census. A lot of money and power is at play regarding the state's population and many believe that is too much power for an organization with such a suspicious past as ACORN.

Some government officials and other supports believe that the census should be gathered by the United States Postal Service. They figure that since the mail carriers are going door to door as is, why not carry out the responsibilities of a census taker while they are at it. The majority of census takers that are hired are stay at home moms, those out of work, or those just looking to make some quick summer cash. They generally aren't the cream of the crop and only receive a small amount of training before they are let loose into the neighborhood. These people are likely to be manipulated by superiors to forge documents or might possibly make errors that could directly affect the outcome of the census.

Those in agreement that ACORN should not handle the census taking responsibilities and think the post office should argue that the postal workers have to go through a battery of testing, training, and background checks in order to be hired as a postal employee. They believe that these workers are already more qualified and are already at the doorsteps of each and every resident of the United States. The postal services is already in dire straits financially and could possibly benefit from the funds spent for census taking going to them.
