Should You Wait Until the Last Minute to Book Your Flights?

Sophie Spyrou

Booking flights months in advance can help you to plan your trip, including your hotel and travel itinerary once you arrive at your destination. But should you wait until the last minute to book your flights?

Prices Can Go Down If You Wait

If you have ever booked your flights months in advance only to discover later on that you could have had the exact same flights for a fraction of the cost by waiting a little longer, then you are not alone. Many people do this and then regret paying extra for flights. Waiting until the very last minute can be a good way of bagging a bargain flight when there are still empty seats left on the plane to fill.

However, it is important to keep in mind that you also run the risk of prices creeping back up again if you wait too late to make a booking, or if your desired flight becomes fully booked.

Flexibility is a Must

Whether you are flying for business or for pleasure, flexibility is a must if you are considering waiting until the last minute to book your flight. Even if you get the flight at the price you want, that does not mean that hotel prices and other amenities and necessities will fit your budget or needs.

Regularly Shop Around for the Best Deals

It pays to shop around for cheap flights, rather than settle for the first flight that comes along. Start your search early and make it a point to regularly check back in with a variety of search engines, airlines and travel agents' for the best deals around. Are you eligible to cash in frequent flier miles? Then do so, and save even more! Sometimes the best deals do not come at the last minute. But it takes some time and effort to find just the right deals.

Booking flights at the last minute is risky. If you are doing so simply to save money on flights as you wait for a last minute bargain, this can backfire if prices start to creep back up again during holiday seasons or when schools are out (this is when a lot of prices go back up). It pays to be flexible, so if your departure/arrival dates can be altered, look at the difference in price by leaving on different days or getting in later or earlier. Shopping around for the best deals can also help you save money, rather than relying on a last minute deal.
