Should I Work at Home?

Read This Before Starting a Home Business

If you are considering working from home, you want to decide whether or not it is a good idea. There are good aspects and bad aspects of working from home. Be sure you understand both the good and the bad before you quit your day job.

The benefits of working from home include working your own hours, being your own boss, and spending more time with your family.

The negative aspects include income fluctuations (or none at first), spending a lot of hours on the job and you have to be self motivated. When I talk about self-motivation, I am talking about the idea that you need to determine what you are going to do and when you are going to do it. When you work from home, no one is going to tell you what to do.

First we will discuss the benefits of working from home more in depth. You can work your own hours. You get to decide when you wake up and when you go to bed. You can even do errands in the middle of the day, eat lunch with your family and decide to spend some quality time with your family. However, depending on what job you choose and whether you have one client or several customers will largely determine your schedule. If you have one client and this client wants to communicate with you at 6:30 am, you will almost certainly need to be up at this time. If you have several customers and you do not need to communicate with them by phone, you might be able to work in the middle of the night. So the idea you can work your own hours is both true and false.

You can be your own boss. This is both true and false. Since your customers are the people giving you a paycheck, they will have something to do with determining your hours. Typically if you have a few customers, those customers will determine your work hours. However, if you have several hundred customers, you will have more freedom to choose when you work and when you do not work. Even with several hundred customers, you will want to make sure you are working during the times they want to buy from you if you are a retail outlet. (If you have an on-line store, this may help eliminate some of these restrictions.)

The idea you can spend more time with your family is both true and false. It largely depends on what type of business you decide you want to run. A lot of people who are self-employed spend more time working than those who are not self-employed. If you want to spend more time with your family, analyze your business carefully to determine if the business you choose will work.

When you start a home business, you may not make a lot of money at first. Therefore, it is always a good idea to start developing a home business while you work for another employer. Once your business starts to provide financially, you will be able to leave your regular employment.

As we discussed earlier, self-employment takes a lot of extra hours. Most successful entrepreneurs work harder and longer than their friends who work for someone else. Be sure to keep this in mind when you decide whether or not you want to own your own business. The positive aspect is you will be able to do things you are extremely passionate about during these long hours. You choose your favorite tasks and this becomes what you get to do for a living.

The most critical aspect of self-employment is you must have determination and self-motivation. If you prefer to have some tell you what to do or how to do it, self-employment might not be the job for you.

I wrote this article to discuss the realities of self employment. I love working from home. I am passionate and hard working. I love being self-motivated and I hate being told what to do. If this is you, seek out self-employment. You will be glad you did! The best word of advice: Don't quit your day job until you know the self-employment will pay the bills!

Good advice! My wife and I have discussed self-employment and may eventually pursue it. She is self-employed but I'm currently working for a national grocery store chain. My dream is to combine photography and writing and be a full time freelancer. Maybe someday :)

You offer a lot of good advice, Sarah. I love being self-employed. The freedom to set my own hours is a great plus. You're right that you need a lot of self-motivation to get going when you work from home.

I can attest to the part about needing to be self-motivated. As someone who works full-time from home, I know first hand how hard it can be to keep the goals you set and stay working enough to bring in the money.
