Should the New York Giants Trade Jeremy Shockey?

D'Angelou
The New York Giants won the Superbowl without their best player from last year, running back Tiki Barber. Tiki opted for charging into the press box instead of into the boxes of the numerous defensive fronts he ran through during his career with the New York Giants. The Giants ability to not only get better without Tiki, but to win the Superbowl, left Tiki subject to serious ridicule by the media and even his former teammates. And while it may hurt that he may have gotten out of the NFL just one year too early, it is cushioned by the fact that he left on his own terms and is now a part of a new occupation that brings him a different satisfaction.

But what about Jeremy Shockey?

Jeremy Shockey is still on the team. Yet when he went down in mid-season with a season-ending injury, the Giants just seemed to get better and better. As noted, they went on to win the Superbowl, and they did it in spite of Shockey's absence. Does this render the great tight end expendable?

Of course it does. The Giants just beat what was being considered one of the greatest teams of all-time en route to winning a Superbowl. They did it without Shockey, and thus have no reason to believe that they can't do it without Shockey again if need be. But just because a player is expendable, doesn't mean you should expend him, does it?

That is the question throughout Giants Nation. Whether or not that is a question the General Manager of the Giants, Jerry Reese, is asking, remains to be seen. However, Reese does have to at least consider the possibility if he at all believes that the Giants' newfound success can be somewhat attributed to Shockey's absence during the latter part of the season.

While there is merit to the Trent Dilfer school of thought that high-maintenance players can detract from a team's success no matter how good they are, I think it is ludicrous to think that the Giants would be better off trading Shockey, as some fans and writers have suggested.

Just look at what Shockey is capable of doing. In the 83 games that he has played up to this point in his career, he averages 4.5 receptions per game, 51 yards per game, 11.4 yards per reception, and a touchdown every 3 games. Those are great numbers. And frankly, outside of some of the injuries he had, they would be much better if the Giants would get him the ball more. Yes, that's right! The Giants have done a poor job of getting Shockey the ball. He has mismatches against every linebacker and safety in the NFC East who guards him, and they don't target him nearly enough. And for those of you who think he is on the decline, his career averages are the same as his stats in the last two years of his career.

So while trading Shockey may seem like the trendy thing to do since the Giants won without him and he can be labeled a cancer to the team. However, they will have a lot more talent if he is on the squad. And if the Giants learned anything from the Patriots while kicking their butts in the Superbowl, it's that adding controversial and outspoken players that are "so-called" cancers to an offense, can actually make you really, really, good on that side of the ball.

I WOULD TRADE SHOCKEY,HE DROPS TO MANY PASSES FOR A TIGHT END FOR HIS SIZE AND SPEED.MAYBE DRAFT A PLAYER TO USE AS H-BACK POSITION AND GIVE A SHOT TO BOSS.

Trade shockey! he is overrated, cocky, and obnoxious. Funny how when he is not playing, the Giants win a WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Jeremey Shockey is the most overrated player to put on cleats. He has done nothing since he has been a giant and only cries when he doesn't see production. He is a tight end not a receiver. The giants winning the superbowl without shockey was no "shock." No pun intended. He disrupts all chemistry that the team has to offer. Look at what they have done without Tiki Barber in the lineup. I agree he's good for a fanbase but at the end of the day he is white trash.

I have been a Giants fan since the year they went to the championship against the Ravens and that was the first game i ever saw the Giants play. Since then i saw the Giants grow in strength from them first accuring Jeremy Shockey two or three years later. He was the first player the Giants picked in the first NFL Draft i ever saw. Ever since that moment i saw the release of Kerry Collins, and the pick up of Eli Manning. I have agreed with every move the Giants made in the offseason since the super bowl, but after they won the Super Bowl i thought that everyone played a role to get there. Everyone forgets that Shockey is a key part to the Giants achieving the chance at the shampionship. Shockey did his part before the playoffs and his injury. He is also another player to cover, so he his still a huge part of the offence. Trading him would be a huge mistake, just like calling Eli Manning inaccurate. Did you see how accurate his throws were throughout the playoffs, against the best teams

No way in the world do you trade Shockey!!!The guy is a beast!!!Eli did not win the Super Bowl, the defense won it for the Giants!
There is no Safety,I reapeat NO Safety in football that can cover him Man-Up!And dont even make me laugh by saying that there is a linebacker in this UNIVERSE that can stick him all game!Lets remember this, historically,Eli is one of the most INACCURATE QB in modern history!
If he did not have PLEX at 6'5"
    And Amani at 6'3"
    And Shockey at 6'6"
He most definitely would have thrown at least 6 more interceptions on top of his already leauge leading mark!!!
Shockey plays with heart and a MOTIVATION that very few have ever displayed!
And by the way,he might be the BEST BLOCKING tight end in the NFL!!!
SO lets not get too silly and make a HUGE mistake!!!

because they won without him don't mean u just go trading a valuable offensive player like shockey. what they need to do is put him on a tight leash and let him know the team follows Eli and not him, then if he can't handle that u get rid of his ass. Don't get me wrong i'm a huge GIANTS fan from NEW ENGLAND and couldn't have been happier when we kick there asses, but shockey can still give you another dangerous option on offense and to trade him i think would be a huge mistake. Let's not forget this is the NFL and injuries are bound to happen, so i say just relax and let shockey hang around for a while.

I would trade Shockey. You know he tells Manning to throw him the ball all the time. Problem is he drops to many passes the still chirps. Trade him and give Boss a shot. If need draft a blocking Tight end.

    Peyton Manning
