Shout at the Devil by Motley Crue.

Probably Their Hardest Album Released

Jay Braun
This was the second album released by Motley Crue. It is often thought of as musically their best album. As a guitarist I can say that some of Mick Mars best guitar work can be heard on Shout at the Devil. The title Shout at the Devil as well as the use of pentagrams in videos and on some album covers drew attention to the group as promoting occultism and Satanism. The reality is that motley Crue are not devil worshipers. This was a popular theme for shock value in heavy metal at the time. It seemed like the in thing to do for bands back in the day, so they did it. That is one of the only things I don't like about the album and some of the lyrics are a bit dark. This includes a cover of the Beatles song Helter Skelter. Here are the songs on the album as well as some of my thoughts on the various songs.

Songs on this Album include

1 In the Beginning

More of a synthesizer song which is narrated by Nikki Sixx in story form with a bit of an eerie story feel to it. Almost like evil winning the final Armageddon.

2 Shout at the Devil

Very heavy song and nice guitar solo. This is also the title track and the most controversial song.

3 Looks that Kill

The song is about those wild women and how you need to watch then. The song has a simple but great rhythm and solo guitar. "If she don't get her way. She'll slice you apart"

4 Bastard

5 Knock em Dead kid

They dedicated this song to the LA Police Department

6 Danger

The song has both slow parts and fasts parts to it. I would not really call it a ballad though. The song talks about growing up rough and a best friend dying. This is one of my favorites on the album.

7 Too Young to fall in love

This song is heavy from the get go. The guitar solo is really sweet and the drums are really good.

8 Helter Skelter

This is a cover of the Beatles Song.

9 Red Hot

This is good guitar song and solo is very melodic

10 Ten seconds to love

11 God Bless the children of the beast

This is an instrumental song with a bit of a classical feel to it. The song has an eerie sounding song that uses a very exotic minor scale mode.

I must admit the vocals are very good and the guitar playing by Mick Mars is as good if not better than usual. This is considered one of their best musical albums. I must say the satanic overtones bother me, but I do not take it literally like some people would.
