Speech Viewership Numbers Accurate?

Take Speech Viewership With A Grain Of Salt

Before we head into the matter I wrote about earlier today, it has now been announced that the death photo of bin Laden will not be released. This is as much a public relations battle as anything else at this stage. Now, they are one up on us. I say show the photo. No matter what, there will always be doubters and those who are too sensitive to see material like this. It's not the proof I need, it's the history of this event that needs closure. Throughout history we have had death masks, photos and even gruesome scenes (JFK comes to mind), so why not show this one?

As we look at the amount of viewers on Sunday night for the president's speech, please note, it was on more than one station. Yes, that matters when breaking out the numbers, which must be done with such events. If you just use 56 million then anyone can claim they won the race for viewers. That's not how it works, however. Sure, it's a big number, but one channel and one network had 111 million viewers for a single show. That would be the Super Bowl on Fox. Even the royal wedding had a number (worldwide) of 2.4 billion. What the heck? Again, more than one channel and networks.

So here it goes, according to Nielsen: SPEECH Sunday: The nine-minute speech from 10:35 to 10:44 p.m. CT (central time for most of my readers) on ABC, CBS, NBC, Telemundo, Univision, CNN, Fox News, HLN and MSNBC averaged 56,512,179 viewers, so says Nielsen. Might want to note that numbers for the Super Bowl and this speech was for U.S. only. That wedding tally is all over the world, and, to be honest, not always reliable.
