Showing Public Support for Barack Obama and His Health Care Reform Bill

Etienne J. Sarfelli
I read an NPR article regarding Barack Obama's possible decision to change his reform bill by taking the public option out of the bill. In addition to the article, there were hundreds of comments by various people. Some of the people implored Obama not to change the bill, some criticized the democrats for caving in to pressure, and some even stated that they voted for Obama because they believed he could make a difference but now realize they were wrong for believing in him. The one thing that all the people who left comments have in common is that they spoke their minds. There was a public outcry. But the problem is that the outcry was not unified; there was no general consensus. And this is a huge part of the problem with the Democratic Party.

Unfortunately for democrats, the same cannot be said about the republicans. The republicans are unified. Even when the party is in trouble, the republicans always stand firm, and they always seem to know how to divide and conquer the democrats. Democrats need to learn how to do this as well. Instead of tearing each other down and blaming each other for what went wrong, we need to band together and raise our voices to create a united front. We know what the problem is, we know where the blame belongs, we know what we want from our government, but we need to fight for our beliefs instead of speaking under our breath or directing our anger at one another.

As I stated previously, we need to act a little bit more like the republicans, form a united front, and support our party leaders. We need to make it clear that we want the public option kept in the health care reform bill. We voted Obama into office, and now we need to stand behind him. If the republicans can voice their disapproval in a town hall meeting, then we need to be prepared to speak at those same town hall meetings. If the republicans are prepared to tell lies in a public forum, then the democrats need to be there to speak the truth. We shouldn't point fingers, turn our heads, or pass the buck. Obama's platform was "Change We Can Believe In," and we voted for him. So where are we? And why aren't we believing? If we truly want things to change, then maybe we need to change a bit as well.

Good article other then that point though...thank you... that's all I really wanted in the first place. After all, I'm a writer just like you. :) I've discovered it's much easier to attract bad attention then good, isn't it? Thanks for the comments.

Tell ya what Jennifer. If Dems remain intransigent on this and do as you call for and support Obama's play here they will see their majority slip by the wayside. You seem to blame my party - Republicans, for this. The reality is it is the rank and file citizens who are screaming no, and NOT any organized effort by Republican or insurance bigwigs. Until Dems accept that this nation DOES NOT WANT what you cats are selling, you will continue to be vexed. Our nation IS NOT in need of the change you think it is, hence so many loud voices against Dem efforts. Go against the VAST MAJORITY and you cats will be out of power for a couple generations. Is that what you want? Works for an evil Republican like me! Good article other then that point though.

Instead of verbally attacking him from our computer screens, we should be attending those same public forums as the republicans to let him know that we are standing behind him. I feel that in this case, he is "caving" into public pressure, and not political pressure.

Certainly, I'm not negating that. But if you had also read my previous piece, you would also see the point that he truly has pushed harder than any president has in the past, and he's probably already dealt with more opposition.

President Obama needs to represent the people who voted him in as President and not cave into all the hype and negativity that is being pushed by those who bend to the will of corporate greed. We need healthcare reform and we need a public option to keep health insurance corporations honest and make sure that all Americans can get affordable health care.
