In the first season of Dexter, his character was well developed. Dexter was adopted as a young boy after his mother was killed. Not only was she murdered, but Dexter witnessed the entire thing. This forever influenced and changed his behavior. As a child his foster father, Harry, learned of Dexter's demented actions of killing things and taught him the rights and wrongs of killing. He taught him how there is a code of conduct to follow when killing people and how the innocent should not be killed and the guilty needs to be punished accordingly. Dexter often has flashback of moments of words of wisdom from Harry. This is how Dexter came to do what he does...killing those evil killers who have managed to dodge criminal prosecution. In his mind, he is doing society a favor by getting rid of those who have killed others. In a way, they are getting what they had coming to them.
Although his killings are far from being unnoticed, he still manages to do them in a discreet enough way as to not get caught. Dexter first likes to stalk his future victims to find out as much about them as possible. He finds out where they live, their daily schedules, and how they got away with the horrible crimes that they committed. When their day comes, Dexter puts shrink plastic down and around everything in the room so nothing get blood soaked. He usually wraps the victim in plastic as he affixes them to a table to prepare them to die. Right before the killing takes place, Dexter talks to the victim and asks them why they did the crime(s) they committed. This way they have a reasoning as to why they find themselves in the predicament they are in, about to be killed. Dexter admits how his first few killings were messy, but he has now critiqued his technique so it is much more precise now. Each victim is killed in various ways, from stabbing them to death to shooting to cutting them up. After he kills each one of his victims, he takes a drop of their blood and puts in on a microscope slide and saves it. It's like a trophy count of all of his victims.
Showtime has a hit with their drama series Dexter. He is a likeable character. Even though he is a killer by night, he does do good during the day. He is great to his girlfriend and her two kids. He is loving towards them as well as protective. All but one of his co-workers likes him very well at the police department. He does his job and he does it good. He may have a bit odd of a personality, but everyone looks past it.

I really did like this show when I had the free Showtime preview- but now I just have HBO and Cinemax- hopefully they'll put "Dexter" on DVD soon.
