Shrek has seen several video game incarnations since the first Shrek film was released in 2001. These games have suited several different game playing platforms, the most recent platform being the Nintendo Wii. A game tied in to the new release Shrek Forever After is slated for a May 18, 2010 release on Amazon.com and should combine the best elements of a couple of previous Shrek video game releases.

Two prior video game releases that have offered fun times are the Shrek 2 video game release for the Playstation 2 platform and the Shrek the Third release for Nintendo Wii.

Shrek 2 Videogame for Playstation 2

The Shrek 2 release for Playstation was a very well-rounded effort well-suited to the technology available at the time of release. The best part of the Shrek 2 video game for Playstation 2 is the fact that it encourages children to play together to accomplish a goal. Videogames that are heavily centered on one player action are nothing but breeding grounds for "It's my turn" arguments and this game avoids that.

With Shrek 2, there are several different character playing options and each character has its own particular sets of strengths. To accomplish certain tasks within the game play and progress on towards Far, Far Away it is necessary to work together to get to the next level. This becomes even more important if younger children are playing together.

There are also special segments of the game that feature "time to shine" moments that are called "Hero Time" by the game. These segments rely on the special talents of a particular player. For example, Fiona's special talent is singing, so that is used.

Shrek 2 is a fun game for to share with the kids and enjoy together as a family.

Shrek the Third for Nintendo Wii

Shrek the Third for Nintendo Wii is also a good release to share with the family and go through together. It follows a format not unlike the Shrek 2 video game for Playstation. Much of the action follows the same plot arc as the movie with a video game twist added to it. The graphics are good as is the voice work, especially for a video game.

The level progressions are challenging enough without being impossible, and the mini-games offer a fun diversion for family members who do not like to follow the action of the main game. Being able to do the actions with the Wii controller makes the game a bit more active than the previous version which is always a plus when dealing with children and video games.

Both the Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third videogames were fun additions to the family library of games, and the upcoming Shrek Forever After release will hopefully be such a game as well.
