Shrek Jr.
With Shrek and Fiona finally settled into their lives as prince and princess of the swamp, they can begin their life together with much joy and celebration. After all, their close friends Donkey and Dragon are the proud parents to several mutant dragon-donkey babies. This gets Fiona wondering if she'll ever have a baby and if so, will it be a human or due to her spell be a full on ogre? Or perhaps a 'mutant' like Donkey's brood. It's only a short time later that Fiona tells shrek she's expecting a baby of their own, causing Shrek to go into a whole line of self-doubt. He's been a loner for so long and now he has friends and a wife - how on earth can he handle a child? Time progresses on, giving glimpses into Fiona's pregnancy and Shrek's continuation to freak out with Donkey there for him. Slowly the day comes where Fiona goes into labor and soon after the world is introduced to Shrek Jr.
Just akin to the old video-format used on Shrek and Fiona's honeymoon, we see this little baby grow up into a small, curious ogre-child before our eyes. Something obviously has to happen in order for a third adventure from the trio, which no doubt will have something to do with this new addition. This makes Shrek realize he is a loving parent in spite of all his doubts and he goes off to rescue his child from whatever foe may have him.
King Shrek and Queen Fiona
With Fiona's parents aging, their health declines rapidly over the course of several years. With the King's passing, Shrek is crowned King of Far Far Away. This presents a whole new course of chaos, with Shrek having to learn etiquette and proper everything in order to run a successful kingdom. Shrek begins to doubt his ability to run a kingdom of humans and of course, this stresses out Fiona - who tries and tries to teach Shrek all she knows. However, Shrek steps down when Fiona decides she can't be with someone who just gives up so easily and he returns to the swamp alone. However, the one who steps in place is none other than the son Fiona's father never had: Prince Charming. He tries to dispose of Fiona in every possible way but just can not. He holds out hope she can turn into a human again. Sadly he is only obsessed with one thing: himself and he turns into a taller, more handsome version of Lord Farquad. Far Far Away begins to fall apart and Shrek has to step in or face the only thing Fiona has left of her parents is destroyed.
Dragon and Donkey
Shrek and Fiona, happily ever after move over and the main focus of the movie turns onto the life of Donkey and Dragon - who in spite of their size difference, seem to be madly in love. However, since the stunt with the Happily Ever After potion, Dragon has been utterly depressed - cue the flashback to what happened to her while Donkey was a Stallion. She turns into a beautiful Nag who balloons out in full pregnancy. She expresses in her own way she wants to be that and Donkey tells her the tale of the potion ending at midnight. So begins the quest to find another Happily Ever After potion so that Donkey, Dragon and their babies can live happily ever after without being persecuted for being dragons or mutant-dragons.
This sends Shrek and Donkey out on a third "whirlwind" adventure to find The Evil Queen - Snow White's step-mother who has been sent to live her life alone in a tower. She is the only one who can re-create this potion the Fairy God Mother perfected and while the journey is long and treacherous, she vows only to make it IF she is granted the right to be free of her prison. This leaves Shrek and more importantly Donkey wondering which way to go.
While Shrek 3 is still in production, it's always amusing to think, "what is going to happen to spur a third movie?" What happens is only months away and I, for one, anxiously await this third movie in the Shrek trilogy. There is no doubt that no matter what happens, the movie will no doubt please those more than anxious Shrek fanatics.
