Shrinking Quantities Strike Again!

Sparkle Brand Why Didst Thou Betrayeth Me?

I've written before about how companies are shrinking the quantity they give us all the while charging us the same price or even more. Since I first really started to notice this, I had switched to Sparkle brand paper towels.

Sparkle brand was a sturdy enough paper towel and still offered 56 sheets per roll with 8 rolls per jumbo pack and all for under $6. For many months now I've faithfully purchased Sparkle brand because they, in turn, continually gave me 56 sheets per roll.

Lo and behold, this morning I went to buy my jumbo pack of towels when I noticed (gasp!) the quantity was now 48 sheets per roll! My heart really sank at this.

I know, I know. Paper towels are a completely mundane item and nothing worth going berserk over, but to know that the very brand I had picked because they DIDN'T shrink quantities now suddenly DID, was very disappointing to say the least.

Sadly, I put back the Sparkle pack and perused the paper towel shelves again. Luckily (and quite coincidentally), Wal-mart's generic brand, Great Value, now had a package of paper towels with 56 sheets per roll and 8 rolls per jumbo pack. The cost was close to $7 but to get the quantity of rolls and sheets, it's worth it.

I am seriously considering writing a letter to Sparkle to inform them of my utter disappointment in them for following the other brands and shrinking their sheet quantity.

P.S. They try to distract you from the lower quantity of sheets by touting "Thicker Sheets, New Look!" on the package. To me however, that was a red flag to check to the quantity.

Great article! We've always bought Scott tissue (toilet paper) and now they've shrunk it on the roll of all things. It used to be wider and looks silly in the bathroom now! Don't they think we notice? What is going on? 5*

I say go for it and write the company a letter. I remember one time I registered a complaint about a spaghetti product and I was sent a whole case. If they want to retain you as a customer you might be surprised at what they might do.

My husband points this phenomenon out to me all the time. He's much more observant than I am.

What really gets me is that I feel like they are tricking us...

That is a great article, its not about the towels, its about trying to slip one by consumers.
