The camp was established back in 1986 as a camp for local children. From there the camp was expanded to reach out to more students by offering the overnight sessions. Campers have come from across the United States, Canada, South America, New Zealand and Europe.
I highly recommend the overnight sessions. My children attended overnight sessions and they thrived in the camp sessions, inviting friends to join them in following years. Special evening events are scheduled and these campers are under 24 hour supervision.
Additional information is available online at http://www.nmspacemuseum.org/shuttlecamp. Registration forms can be downloaded from the website and should be mailed with the full tuition to reserve your spot at camp. Registration forms should be mailed to: New Mexico Museum of Space and Education Dept., PO Box 5430, Alamogordo, NM 88311-5430.
While at camp, students also have to opportunity to see some of the surrounding area away from Camp. White Sands National Monument is located just outside of Alamogordo. Here, great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed 275 square miles of desert and created the world's largest gypsum dune field. Campers can hike, dig and slide for hours in the pristine white sand dunes.
Holloman Air Force Base is also located in Alamogordo, home of the Stealth fighters. White Sands Missile Range, a center for research, is also located in Alamogordo. Campers will have the opportunity to visit these locations on field trips.
If you are coming from out-of-town, Alamogordo can be accessed by way of the large airports in Albuquerque, New Mexico or El Paso, Texas.
