Shut-up About Casey Anthony Already, You Sad, Pathetic People
The Case Anthony Trial Has Become a Local Obsession and a National Sensation, and I Wish You'd All Shut Up About it Already
Perhaps you've heard, but Casey Anthony, mother of two-year-old Caylee Anthony who disappeared only to be found dead in a retention pond in 2008 under very suspicious circumstances, is on trial.
What's that? You haven't heard? There's no way that's possible unless you've disowned the Internet, shunned cable television, or have not been around a nationally-distributed news publication since 2007.
Really, it's what everyone is talking about in the Twitterverse and on Facebook. And if you have the pleasure of living in or around The City Beautiful -- Orlando, FL that is -- like I do, then this case has likely captivated you from day one.
What's not to pay attention to? There's the defense attorney who is obviously in way over his head, yet keeps throwing the curve balls at the prosecutors (and making every mistake possible in the process). Then there is Casey, the mother and suspect murderer, who went to a rival school of mine, who is a good-looking party animal who apparently wasn't ready to be a mother and used some, shall we say questionable techniques to get her daughter to sleep. Oh! And then there are Casey's parents, who seemed to fit the part of the loving, caring, and tragic-stricken grandparents while the case developed, only to be accused of abusive parenting themselves, by the daughter they defended no less!
Finally, and most tragically, there is little Caylee, the lone victim of this circus of a criminal case. The innocent, wide-eyed, and undeniably adorable child was the victim of circumstance. With a mother who wasn't ready to be a parent and grandparents in denial about their daughter's ability to care for her, the little girl ended up a corpse found in a dried up retention pond bound with duct tape, including over her little mouth with a playful sticker on top just for good measure.
This is an undeniably interesting case, if you love to hear about human tragedy, liars, and a family that will surely never recover from a tragedy.
You know what? I'm good.
I wrote that brief summary having never listened to one second of testimony or questioning from the courtroom. How's that? Because I have an army of friends (thankfully none of my family though) who discuss every small detail of this case over every social media site available.
I am bombarded by news I don't want to hear or read everywhere I turn. I'm asked about my opinion of the matter regularly and can hear talk of it around the water cooler or sitting at my desk (with headphones on no less!).
But my refrain remains the same about this subject: I don't care. Let this family answer to the law and suffer in peace. This is not reality TV. This is not some television drama. This is the world of one family absolutely crumbling, and it is tragic. I don't need more problems in my life, and definitely don't want to watch someone suffer through theirs.
Casey was not a celebrity before this (although some will argue she will be if she gets off). So why are we paying attention?
Locals have obsessed over this case because, well, it's local news. Whatever. Local news should instead be called the Tragedy Reports, because that's all they report on, tragedy. But now the country has described the attention paid to this case as "an obsession." That is disgusting.
You all should be ashamed of yourself. No matter how that poor little girl died, weather Case ever tells the truth about anything, or if those grandparents knew more than they led on, the fact still remains that a little girl is dead and the process for justice is underway. That's good enough for me.
Apparently, you people have a different idea about why this is important, but please spare me the details or explanations. I don't care.
My life has enough issues to import more from some other family. I'd rather watch the Women's World Cup, or Wimbledon, or... paint dry. Anything but hearing over and over and over the grizzly details of how a young child was treated horribly and died a tragic death.
Hey, here's a thought: Get a life. You all surprise me with your lack of things to do.
