SIA Licensing and Training

The Security Industry Association is an organization designed to standardize and improve security standards in the private sector. The SIA's authority stems from the Private Security Industry Act of 2001, which defines the industries which require SIA licensing. In addition to licensing, this association oversees the standardization of security requirements for a number of industries, including the transpiration of monies and the monitoring of public security cameras.

There are many industries and positions which require SIA licensing. As an employee, you may be required to receive a SIA license to fulfill your duties. Some supervisory positions require a license, even if they are not directly involved in the regulated area. Such positions are referred to as non-front line positions, and often have different licensing requirements than front line positions.

Even if your current job does not require you to possess a SIA license, you can benefit from successfully completing the process. SIA licenses will increase your appeal to employers, as well as the variety of jobs for which you are qualified. Your extended resume will set you apart from other job seekers, as you show not only determination and planning, but the willingness to adapt to a specialized environment.

The licensing process requires a licensing fee, a training course and the completion of a certification class from the appropriate awarding body. The licensing fee may be paid by you, or by your employee. If you are paying your own licensing fee, you may be able to claim tax relief on the cost. If more than one license is needed to fulfill your duties, you may be able to receive a 50% discount on the cost of the second license, depending upon the expiration date of the first.

Certain licenses can be integrated with other licenses. That is, the SIA deems that the successful completion of a certain license also covers certain requirements of another, and a second license is not necessary. The SIA offers a list of current integration options.

In order to receive a SIA license, you must successfully receive approval from the license's awarding body. To pass the licensing exam, you should utilize a SIA training course. These courses cover the current requirements for each license to ensure that you are well prepared for the licensing exam. Academies offering this training are approved by the SIA.

Once you have received your initial license, you can continue on to higher level licenses which may increase your salary prospects or open up new markets for your employment options. The SIA training courses are typically short, intensive classes which offer the maximum benefit over a short period of time. Along with your certification training, you may also receive services to assist you in successfully obtaining the license and securing employment in the licensed field.
