Siberian Huskies, Training Sled Dogs

When talking about sled dogs everyone naturally thinks of the Siberian Husky which are dogs that commonly used as Eskimo sled dogs, along with Alaskan Malamutes and the Samoyed.

Siberian Huskies are good natured hard working dogs and possess a very high endurance trait.

Many people think Siberian Huskies look like wolves, but if treated right these dogs make great family pets. Siberian Huskies are gentle, outgoing and very dedicated to their owners.

Siberians need exercise regularly and if you don't use them as working dogs, they require an active lifestyle. Siberians also need to be brushed regularly, their coats are thick and can get matted easily. Siberian Huskies have a double coat and also have a moderate amount of shedding.

Siberian Huskies have become very popular as family dogs in Canada and the United States. Actually more and more Siberians are being bought for family pets and because of their personalities then being used as a working breed. Siberians can for the most part easily be transitioned into family pets with regular yards, in the house living, however apartment dwellings can be a little difficult.

Siberians need proper training and lots of attention especially when it comes to exercising. Siberians also prefer cold regions, if the climate is hot their fur tends to not grow as thick but they still need to be monitored closely so they don't get overheated.

Siberians are quite smart and well mannered and easily learn any task.

Siberians have the most beautiful almond shaped eyes, most Siberians have blue eyes, some have brown but still others may have one of each color. The majority of Siberian Huskies have the most beautiful markings, with striking colorings and patterns. My male Siberian was known as a pie bald and had a solid white head and beautifully patterned body. His name was Charlie and he had the one blue eye and one brown. He was smart, large and very protective of me, when I was pregnant with my first daughter he used to like to lay his head across my belly and feel the baby's movement.

Most Siberians reach approximately 23 inches in height, and approximately 60 or so pounds in weight. With proper treatment they can live to 15 or so years in age.

At one time I bred Siberian Huskies and it was very enjoyable. Their well mannered personality made them a very wanted breed and most litters bring six to eight adorable puppies. I loved breeding Siberians, but I eventually gave it up because I always had a problem with selling the pups, they were all so cute and easy to get attached to quickly.

I highly recommend Siberian Huskies as family pets and they are easy to train for most any kind of lifestyle. The Siberians almost instinctively pulled little wagons around so the kids could ride and although we didn't use them as working sled dogs they loved playing in the snow with the kids.
