Sick and Tired

If You Think Your Life is Worthless, You're Probably Right

Anthony Odom
I am sick and tired of hearing about what may have motivated that lowlife punk in Nebraska to open fire on a mall full of unarmed people. I could care less why this twit decided that the pain of losing a fast-food job and a girlfriend was so great that he had to take it out on people that had nothing to do with it before offing himself. I don't know his name, nor do I want to. Because that's what he wanted and I refuse to give him the pleasure. The stories about this case read like a "How not to Give a Narcissistic Murderer the Attention He Wants" manual: "Who Was the Shooter?" asks ABC News. "Mall Gunman Called Quiet and Depressed" read another headline. "Gunman May Have Smuggled Weapon in Shirt" blared another. Little to nothing about the victims. Little to nothing about the real heroes who responded to the crime. Oh well, maybe this time, that approach will prevent another self-absorbed little knucklehead from seeking fame through cowardice. Yeah, right.

All that aside, I address this to any and all lowlifes out there who may be thinking about doing the same thing. To all of you out there who are sitting around right now with your lip poked out because your life is so worthless and meaningless and blah, blah, blah, you're absolutely right. Your life is meaningless and worthless and etc., etc., etc. That's why you lost your job. That's why your girlfriend left you for greener pastures. That's why other people are happy and you are not. Do you know why your life is worthless? Well, buttercup, it's worthless because you aren't living it. Instead of going out there and grabbing life by the nose-hairs, you choose to sit at home and wallow in your own self-pity like a pig wallows in his own feces. What girl would want such a man? What employer would hire you? Do you think people want to be around people who suck the life out of everything with their own self-absorbed belief that the world should pity them because their pain is so much greater than everyone else's? NO! People want to be around the opposite of you: Positive people who have a vision and a future and who aren't afraid to "suck the marrow out of life." Here's a hint. Instead of getting your sick little jollies watching The Basketball Diaries or some other such drivel for the umpteenth time, why don't you get outside and go do some good in this world. Plant a tree. Donate some clothes to an orphanage. I mean, how many black t-shirts can you possibly need anyway? Go to your local park and pick up garbage so the kids can have a clean place to play. Look for pennies and other coins on the ground and such and give it to those people ringing the Salvation Army bells outside of Wal-Mart. Go cut some old lady's grass and ask for nothing in return. Dear God man, do anything other than get a gun and shoot people. "Doing unto others as you would have done unto you" is exactly what you need to turn it around, man.

Look here, I realize that nobody probably took the time to tell you this because we live in a society of dim-wits like your parents raising dim-wits like yourself, but sometimes, life is hard. So the thing to do is this: accept that fact, and then go out and do what you can to make somebody else's life easier. After all, that's why we're here: For each other.

So do yourself and the world around you a favor: quit feeling sorry for yourself, put away the whiny, "Momma didn't love me so I'm gonna yell and scream and take it out on everybody else" music, stop playing Halo or whatever shoot 'em up game your currently spending way too much time playing and thinking about, get a haircut, wash your face every once in a while, and go do something constructive with your life by enriching someone else's. That's really what'll put and end to all your pain.

I'm fine with gun control....I mean, I think there should at least be as many regulations on gun ownership as there are on car ownership. I also think it should be difficult for people who are cocoa for coo-coo puffs to buy guns. But I am uncomfortable with an outright ban. It's a cliche', but it's true...if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.
