Sidewalk Safari (Part II)
The first mobility scooter was invented by Allen R. Thieme in 1968. This fascinating piece of recent history can be accessed on wikipedia/mobility_scooter#Description. I always thought of scooters as a plaything for children. A scooter has two wheels, a board for the child's foot and a tiller for steering. It is powered by the child. My scooter also has a tiller, but it has a chair I sit on, and is powered by a battery. If you've never been on a scooter before, the first time you use one can be a little scary. I had driven a car for about 50 years, yet when I first got on the scooter, I kept moving in little jerks and stopping. I kept wanting to fasten my seatbelt and adjust the rearview mirror and the scooter had neither. I felt so exposed - there should be a roof over me and I should be inside the vehicle. Finally, I got up the nerve to hold the lever steady and I took off at the lowest possible speed. It was then I discovered what fun it was to drive an electric scooter. To be continued...
