Sierra Storm Guarantees Great Holiday Ski Conditions for Tahoe

Arctic Blast Dumps 20-plus Inches of Powder

I pulled out of Sacramento at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, headed up Interstate-80 to Truckee. Snow began just past Colfax, at about 2400 feet and got heavier clear up to Donner Summit at 7200 feet. Traffic was light and I hit my house at Tahoe-Donner in Truckee at 11:00pm. There was 10 inches accumulated on the steep driveway but I made it into the garage.

Wind was blowing hard and the temperature was 14 degrees F. The table in the attached picture was clear at midnight, because the wind was blowing all the snow off. The wind died, and ten more inches of snow piled up on the table between midnight and 5:00am.

There's no school today in most of the foothill and high Sierra school districts; the buses just can't get going.

Most ski resorts have been open for a week, i.e. Northstar, Squaw Valley, Kirkwood, Sugar bowl etc. They've had limited operation...until today. With snow expected to fall day today, and another front predicted for Thursday, full operation is expected with top-to-bottom powder conditions.

KCRA-TV was swamped with pictures sent in by viewers.

Snow made an appearance in several places near Sacramento, near sea-level. I think I'll go up to Northstar and pick up my season ski pass...as soon as I can get out of the driveway.

My sister Amy had a house in Truckee. It's incredibly beautiful up there for those who can endure....

I grew up in the snow, went to college in still more of it and, ultimately came to abhor it. Seeing it on TV as I ever care to get again!
