Providence, Rhode Island isn't the most well-known New England city, but it offers a wealth of experiences for tourists and locals alike. I spent some time nearby while on a construction project and got to explore the area. Here are some options for exploring Providence today.
Providence Ghost Tour
Began in 2006, the Providence Ghost Tour runs each year from May through November and takes persons interested in the paranormal on a dark circuit through the historic East Side, which dates back to the early 1600s. It was the first above ground haunted tour I'd gone on, and it was a fun time.
Culinary Arts Museum
Great for foodies and history buffs too, the Culinary Arts Museum has a fine collection of things related to food. See utensils, stoves, artifacts from kitchens, diners, county fairs, and household tables. The displays and recreations are extensive, you will feel like you are in some of the sets.
Waterfire
Combining street fair with music festival and bonfires on the water, the event is unique and entertaining. It only happens on select weekends, so be sure to check the schedule. The music of Waterfire is as unique as the event, providing an eclectic backdrop to the visual stimulation. A definite must if in Providence.
Brown University
Not just a top college, Brown University is also a beautiful campus that is fun to explore. On top of College Hill on the East Side, it's interesting mix of architecture mixes well with the landscaping to provide a relaxing experience.
Roger Williams Park
A fine urban park with beautiful grounds, Roger Williams Park is more than just a beautiful place to spend an afternoon. The Zoo is top-notch, the Botanical Center is beautiful, and the Museum of Natural History and Planetarium offer worthy diversions.
Waterplace Park and Riverwalk
One of the country's great waterfronts, even when Waterfire isn't happening. Venetian style footbridges, cobblestone paths, all set at the nexus of three rivers. A great place to people watch.

Post a CommentI spent one of the coldest, most frugal (stayed in the YMCA for the only time ever) weekends of my life in Providence, but I remember two good things: a certain understated charm (not like we southernes pile on in places like Charleston & Savannah) and a wonderful local beer that I never found anywhere else.
