Sign of Hope

A Christmas Poem

Brad Jarvis
A sign of hope we saw in birth, of graceful innocence; a child showed the way of love and loss of decadence.

Pursuit of things and power, He showed would lead to doom. Our rape and pillage of the world for Him the end should loom.

But over time his followers transformed his hopeful birth, from solemn worship of the best to gutting of the Earth.

His message of salvation, by simple love and care, became a selling catchphrase, its meaning lost or rare.

But now we face the hard times He said would be our test: We've used a third of what we had, we soon may use the rest.

Our hope lies in His message, if we can hear it true, and grasp its deepest meaning, accept its point of view.

We are family, all of us, and not just Christmas Day. The fate of others is our own, in all we do and say.

By caring for each other, regardless of the past, of culture, skin, or what we own, we have a chance to last.

That child born so long ago taught us love and grace; the key to life eternal, for ours, the human race.
