Launched in 2002 by Dr. Sandy Goldberg, A Silver Lining Foundation (ASLF) provides people with information concerning cancer resources, treatment options and support services. The organization's BUY A MOM A MAMMOGRAM™ program gives access to mammograms for women who cannot afford them. Since the program's inception in 2006, more than 1,000 women have received information about and access to a no-cost screening mammogram in a timely and respectful fashion. The foundation partners with three area hospitals to provide mammograms at no cost: University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago, Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights and South Shore Hospital in Chicago.
At each participating Jewel-Osco location representatives from ASLF, including Dr. Goldberg, will be at a table near the store entrance. They will be happy to meet with anyone and qualify them on site for a no-cost mammogram.
"This is a great opportunity for underserved women in need of this potentially life-saving procedure," Goldberg said. "By setting up three different pre-qualifying events at different locations in the Chicago area, it becomes accessible to more people in need."
Within 48 hours, ASLF will send a letter of instructions to each person who signs up. Each hospital partnered with ASLF is within a mile or two radius of each Jewel-Osco location, making the trip to the hospital convenient.
The event dates, times and Jewel-Osco locations are as follows:
• May 3, 2008; 7530 South Stony Island, Chicago; 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.
• May 9, 2008; 440 East Rand Road, Arlington Heights; 2 p.m. - 4 p.m.
• May 10, 2008; 1220 South Ashland, Chicago; 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
"Jewel-Osco is proud to support the ongoing work of Dr. Goldberg and A Silver Lining Foundation," said Keith Nielsen, President of Jewel-Osco. "By helping to make this information and free screening service available, we hope it will save lives as medical research shows that early detection is the key to successful treatment."
Since ASLF was launched in 2002 as a 501(c)3 charitable organization by Dr. Sandy Goldberg, the organization has provided more than 400,000 people with information about cancer resources, treatment options and support services. Through the organization's programs, services and personal support, the foundation strives to provide opportunities for medically underserved people affected by cancer. The organization lives by a phrase Dr. Goldberg's mother used to live by: "No matter what your situation, you have to see the silver lining."
The administrative offices of ASLF are located at 134 N. LaSalle, suite 1218, Chicago, IL 60602. The organization runs several cancer related programs, including BUY A MOM A MAMMOGRAM ™, the Chicagoland Cancer Information Coalition (CCIC) and The Evelyn Goldberg Center at the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago.
The Chicagoland Cancer Information Coalition is comprised of advocacy groups, social service, voluntary and community-based health organizations as well as city and county departments that are dedicated and committed in the fight against cancer.
The Evelyn Goldberg Center's services include a library containing a broad range of cancer information and the Evelyn Goldberg Quality of Life Assistance Fund, a financial grant program provides support for patients experiencing difficulty with daily life activities.
