Children do actually show several signs that they are ready to begin their toilet training adventure. Here are the top ten signs your child is ready to begin their toilet training adventure:
1. Your child begins to have dry naps. If your child can wake up from a nap with a dry diaper he/she is most likely ready to begin potty training.
2. Your child is walking and talking. They don't need to be able to run a marathon or recite the names of all the states, but being able to verbalize basic needs such as "I'm hungry" tell that your child can understand and verbalize the needs of their body.
3. Your child tells you that they have a dirty diaper. It does not have to be the moment that it happens. They just have to let you know that they have a wet diaper and they are not comfortable with it.
4. Your child takes an interest in other people going to the bathroom. They might ask what you are doing when you go into the bathroom. They want to go with you, they want to learn what is going on.
5. Your child knows how to pull up and down his or her pants. They will be comfortable pulling on and off underwear.
6. Your child's bowel movements are regular and well-formed. Your child begins to have potty in his or her pants on a somewhat regular schedule.
7. Your child is dry throughout the night.
8. Your child follows simple directions. He understands how to put his or her toys away. He would walk to the toilet if told to do so.
9. Your child wants to wear big girl or big boy underwear. They ask to wear them over their diaper, or ask to wear them and no diaper.
10. Your child is at an appropriate age and is not going through any major life changes such as the birth of another child or the family moving.
Every child is on his or her own schedule. Do not push your child into potty training if they are not ready. This should be an exciting and fun time in their lives. They should look forward to being a big kid and using the potty like mom and dad.

Post a CommentHey! thank you so much...THat is a great info!
Ooooh, thank you for this! We are still at least a couple of years away, but I will bookmark this for when we're ready!
Great information. I am definitely ready for pottie training :-)
Ah I was so happy when this was over for us!! Great tips :)
Ohhhhh....the dreaded potty training bit! I am so glad those days are over. Boys were easier than my girls, but still work. Nice article!
Good advice, my niece always cried when her diaper got dirty as if horrified :)
When my one daughter wanted to be trained, she put training pants over her overalls and on her bear. She was only 18 months. I thought, I don't think this will work but I'll give it a try. Lo and behold it worked. She only needed a diaper at night for a few more months (and I was only putting training pants away for when I needed them, go figure).
I use to work at a daycare center and this is one learning activity that would stress out parents to no end.
When my daughter was fighting a losing battle training her three year old son, her 18 month old daughter watched and one day said, "I can do that," and "ended up training herself! You best believe this spurred the big brother to "get on the pot."
Great list! Toilet training can be a tough time.
