Signs of Kidney Disease in Dogs

As dogs age they often suffer from kidney disease. Kidney disease in dogs is one of the most common medical conditions for dogs to suffer from. Sadly, kidney disease often leads to death. Kidney disease can take many forms but it is simply a deconstructive process that occurs within the kidney. As the kidneys begin to fail because of damage, the body is no longer able to filter waste materials from the blood stream.

Causes of Kidney Disease

Kidney disease can be caused from a number of factors, most commonly the aging process. However, there can often be inherited defects that cause damage to the kidneys. Infections can also cause damage to the kidneys in dogs. You are rarely able to prevent damage to the kidneys from occurring and the condition can be difficult to treat early because symptoms don't develop until the later stages.

Signs of Kidney Disease

There are many signs of kidney disease in dogs but unfortunately, most of these signs don't occur until at least two thirds of the kidneys functions have been destroyed. Although it is difficult to recognize the symptoms of kidney disease, the earlier the symptoms are noticed, and the earlier treatment is sought, the better the prognosis is for the pet. Early treatment is vital for prolonging a dogs life.

One of the most obvious symptoms of kidney disease in dogs is a loss of appetite and weight loss. Other signs of kidney disease in dogs includes an increased thirst, as well as frequent urination and increase amounts of urine passed. A dog with kidney disease often has a poor coat. They can also experience vomiting and in some cases signs of depression. Signs of kidney disease in dogs can occur very suddenly, but most often they develop slowly over time.

Treatment of Kidney Disease

With simple clinical evaluations and laboratory testing, a veterinarian can easily diagnose kidney disease. With careful testing, the veterinarian will determine the cause of the damage and choose a treatment plan for your pet. Treatment usually includes medications and home treatment.

Home treatment for kidney disease includes keeping a fresh supply of clean water present for your pet at all times. Also, all directions given by the veterinarian must be followed correctly. Often, a special diet will be needed for dogs with kidney disease. These diets usually consist of reduced dietary sodium. A certain feeding schedule may be required as well.
