Sigourney Weaver Lashes Out at Academy Awards Voters

Actress Sigourney Weaver Says James Cameron Should Have Won Best Director

Fans of Avatar and great movies alike should not be surprised to learn actress Sigourney Weaver is lashing out against Academy Awards voters for snubbing director James Cameron in favor of his ex-wife and Academy Awards winner for Best Director Kathryn Bigelow.

Sigourney Weaver says Avatar director James Cameron should have won an Oscar for Best Director during the 82nd Annual Academy Awards. According to Showbiz Spy, Weaver said he lost out because the Academy wanted to make history by naming its first female Best Director.

According to Showbiz Spy, Weaver, who is currently in Brazil promoting Avatar, told Folha Online, "Jim didn't have breasts, and I think that was the reason." Adding, "He should have taken home that Oscar."

She may have a point. Avatar was a huge hit at the box office, having raked in more than $743 million in the United States and more than $2 billion worldwide, making it the highest grossing film in history, versus The Hurt Locker which made $16 million in the United States and $40 million worldwide.

One could surmise something fishy happened at this year's Academy Awards.

Fans of Avatar were stunned when Cameron lost out to Bigelow. Considering the popularity between the two with Avatar being the favorite and obvious choice, it should have been an easy guess as to who would win. I don't know about anyone else, but when they announced Kathryn Bigelow Best Director, my jaw dropped and I was in stunned silence.

Weaver was also disappointed The Hurt Locker beat out Avatar as Best Picture. This was another shocker for fans. Again, between the two movies, Avatar should have won hands down. According to Contactmusic News, Weaver said the film missed out because it's "fashionable" for films "nobody saw" to take top prizes.

Avatar:

Avatar is a movie about a paraplegic marine, Jake Sully, who is sent to the planet Pandora, a planet inhabited by the Na'vi. Once on Pandora, Jake learns Parker Selfridge, a greedy corporate-type, intends to drive off the Na'vi so his corporation can mine the woodland.

In the form of an avatar, Jake infiltrates the Na'vi - bonding with them and falls in love with Neytiri. Jake is forced to take a stand when Colonel Quaritch moves forward with his plan to exterminate the Na'vi. An epic battle ensues.

The Hurt Locker:

The Hurt Locker is about a group of elite soldiers whose job is to disarm bombs. A new sergeant, William James, takes over the team after Sgt. Matt Thompson is killed disposing an IED.

Team members Sgt. J.T. Sanborn (a by-the-book-type) and Spc. Owen Eldridge (an insecure soldier who worries his actions could result in the death of a civilian or another soldier) find themselves in a deadly game of urban combat when James shows his reckless side without regard to his team, the scene, or himself. Regardless of their individual issues, the team must stay away of whoever is at the bombsite because some of them may be the bombers themselves.

Both movies are available on DVD.

You'd think Sigourney (who is indeed a great actress) would no better than to question the Academy on Kathryn winning the Oscar. Avatar is astonishing on a visual level, but The Hurt Locker is a flawless piece of work.

If the Academy was going to give an Oscar to Bigelow just because she's a woman, then a woman would have won Best Director a long time ago. Jane Campion and Sofia Coppola were nominated and didn't win, and they had to settle for Best Screenplay Oscars. Bigelow deserved Best Director because her work was truly brilliant, and she created one of the best war movies ever that was not at all political.

Dueling egos. Celebrities being who and what they are. Better if the stick to what they really know - memorizing lines and pretending to be someone (or something) other than who and what they really are.
