On the way to the hotel I passed a place called Silas' Steakhouse on Gulf Boulevard. A steakhouse near the hotel? Sounds great to me. But how do I know that ol' Silas can grill up a New York Strip? Am I better off driving further down the road to the nearest Outback or Durango? I went on a quest. I asked the hotel staff, any local I encountered, bartenders, fellow guests and anyone I thought who might know the quality of Silas' Steakhouse. I decided I had to take the plunge, and no, I didn't get married by a guy dressed as Elvis. I walked the short distance from the Beachcomber Resort to Silas' Steakhouse. The only review I had been given indicated questionable customer service with decent food.
Upon arriving at the table, you are greeted with a simple bi-fold newspaper that provides background on the namesake of the restaurant as well as the simple menu. Offering steak and seafood, the selection is simple yet still comprehensive. I ordered the New York Strip Steak which was grilled to perfection while sampling the coconut shrimp which were also fabulous. The soup of the day was a Red Pepper Bisque, a unique soup that took my taste buds for a ride without overwhelming me with heat.
As for the service, the wait staff was polite and professional and served the table with a smile. The food was served promptly and prepared correctly and with the dining area's view of the bay, I wasn't locked away in a cave to eat my steak only to be assaulted by the sunlight when I left. Just as the menu promises, you can expect a surprise with your meal. Without ruining the surprise, I can assure you that it doesn't involve the check but you'll like it just the same.
