Silent Film Masters: Man of a Thousand Faces - Lon Chaney Sr

The Hunchback and the Phantom, Yes, but Tons More

Vincent Summers
The world of the silent movie-for it is a world unto itself-is not often experienced by the young. The finest silent movie gems are seldom placed before the public eye. Besides, the young are often distracted, intent on all things popular and modern. A pity it is, too, as momentous occurrences go unrecognized, unappreciated. Who among the young, for example, has even heard of Lon Chaney, Sr.-"The Man of a Thousand Faces?"

A Few Brief Facts-Not Too Many

Lon Chaney, Sr. was born in 1883 and died in 1930. He was the son of deaf mute parents. He spoke to them by sign language-by pantomime. His first wife, by whom he had his only son, Creighton Chaney (later to be known as Lon Chaney, Jr.), was erratic, unstable, not able to cope with married life. Scandal associated with their marriage forced Lon Chaney, Sr. off the stage and into the Silents.

The Man of a Thousand Faces - the Movie

To gain an appreciation of Lon Chaney, Sr., it might be best to view the film presentation starring James Cagney and Dorothy Malone, The Man of a Thousand Faces, made in 1957. This film is not only a marvelous motion picture; it lays a basic appreciation for the life behind the man. It shows us the man's heart. It forces us to want to learn more and see experience the works of the master. Watch the opening clear through the final scenes. If you come away dry-eyed and unappreciative, you are a rare breed. It may be obtained through Netflix.

Begin with Hors D'oeuvres

Before you watch a full-length feature, why not watch this online video-the only remaining footage of the famous lost film, The Miracle Man (1919). What astounding footage! But did you see much of Lon Chaney, Sr. in this excerpt? Why have another hors d'oeuvres? Try this "unmasking" of the Phantom of the Opera.

Next - The Unknown

This movie is decidedly dark and definitely not for children. In it, Lon plays Alonzo, the armless. This movie is provided online in chapters. Here is Chapter One. If you ever had a notion of what a silent film was, this presentation will likely shatter it! The movie co-stars Joan Crawford.

Outstanding, Vincent. The silent film, coupled with "sound track" provided by a theatre organ was an entertainment genre comparable to none.
