Silent Sadness

Lisa Stanley

That which haunts us also defines us.

Living is brutal

Breath is hard to find

When loss overcomes us

Fate twists the memories into bitter tears

That drowns us in sorrow

Your eyes should not have to see

A lifeless child

That once you held in the cradle of your arms

Soon after she took her first breath

Eyes forever closed

A child so pure and innocent

As she turned to you and smiled

Never knowing that the grips of death

Would soon consume her

In a violent rage, a fury so wicked

And cruel

Your faith tells you that it is better she goes

And not be left alone

Without the mother

Who died trying to save her

Who could not save herself

Without the grandmother

Who believed she was an angel from heaven

And would have died of heartbreak

If she had witnessed the aftermath

That you deal with now

But you battle with the faith

That you have always held dear

And that has in the end always been your only true friend

You can not make sense of the reality

That bears down on you soul

Deadens your heart

With empty pain

They say that which does not kill us

Makes us stronger

But you ponder how strength can come

When you feel nothing but agony

That you can not escape

In waking

Or sleep

There is no reason why

Your eyes should see the horror

See the child who loved her

From the moment of his birth

Cry out in tears of pain

And you fall to pieces

For you can not be strong

Even for your own child

You have no peace to offer

Only the comfort of your arms

And your tears

That which haunts us

Defines us

Defines the life you choose to lead

The memories you bear or cease

The love you carry within your heart

In silent sadness

"Fate twists the memories into bitter tears" - this line is so incredible!

I sit here reading your poem about Silent Sadness and I understand so well what that is. I had two grandchildren that never got to grow up. One lived for 12 hours and the other lived for 2 months and 3 days.. neither ever left the hospital after being born. We visit their graves once a year... but I know they are in the arms of God.

The death of a child is the worst...this poem breaks my heart...deep and well written.
