Silently Confused

Melissa Lawson
"Seek another", was your answer,
though it seemed hard for you to say.
Then said you can't be with another,
till a divorce is underway.
"I might want something later,"
you emphasized with force.
"Do you understand?" you asked.
"I'm getting a divorce."

You looked away and hung your head,
"I have to do this right."
Looking in my eyes, you add,
"She is my second wife."
"You should work on your marriage,"
I told you, feeling dread.
You looked at me, "It will not work";
and then you shook your head.

Why did you tell me
that I should seek another,
Then talk of possibilities,
and mention all the other?
Were you pushing me away,
or asking me to wait?
Are you holding me at bay,
hoping desire will abate?

Still, you confuse me;
your answers are not clear.
You seem undecided;
I'm not sure of what I hear.
Your answer brought more questions,
yet I'm afraid to ask again.
Our friendship is uncertain, now;
the answers might bring pain.

I can't be with another,
till you're out of my head.
But I can't be with you, either--
so I stay alone, instead.
I still don't know what you want from me,
so I simply wait for you.
I observe in silent confusion;
I don't know what else to do.

    Great poem. Men and women are like separate species.
