Silk PureAlmond Original Flavor Almond Milk Review

Excellent Taste but Low in Protein

Despite being an avid milk drinker my parents and two younger brothers have recently embraced drinking non-dairy beverages in place of their milk in light of nuclear trouble in the world. Their beverage of choice was almond milk. I had not had the opportunity of trying this particular milk, however I was quite familiar with rice and soy milk, so I thought that I would try this one as well. I ended up trying a couple different brands and flavors of almond milk but the first one that I tried was Silk PureAlmond Original Flavor Almond Milk.

I am a big fan of almonds and if they were cheaper I would be inclined to include them in my oatmeal and granola cereals that I make and I love when they are in the cereals that I buy. I was not sure what to expect with almond milk, but I imagined that it would taste like almonds quite a bit. Honestly, the almond taste that exists is not overwhelming but makes for one of the best tasting non-dairy beverages that I have tried. I do not really care for sweet drinks, and while I will get vanilla flavored rice and soy milk from time to time I am not that into a very sweet taste. Silk PureAlmond Original Flavor Almond Milk tasted positively great. It was a nice change from the regular milk and soy milk that we had been drinking and I was so glad that I tried it. In addition to having a nice flavor because it was not plain regular, soy, or rice milk, the flavor also tasted very natural. The flavoring did not have an artificial feel to it; I wondered what this meant for the ingredients.

The ingredients for Silk PureAlmond Original Flavor Almond Milk were all natural almond milk made of filtered water and almonds, all natural evaporated cane juice, calcium carbonate, sea salt, locust bean gum, gellan gum, sunflower lecithin, d-alpha-Tocopherol, which is vitamin E, zinc gluconate, vitamin A palmitate, riboflavin, which is vitamin B2, vitamin B12, and vitamin D2. The ingredients were quite similar to the ingredients in other non-dairy beverages from Silk so there were not any surprises about that aspect and I was quite pleased with them. I was very pleased to find that whole almonds were used to make the milk, but this surprised me because of the fact that the protein was as low as it is. After looking over the ingredients I was not sure what to expect from the nutrition facts.

There were a few surprises in the nutrition facts of Silk PureAlmond Original Flavor Almond Milk and not all of them were positive. In one serving of this almond milk there was only 60 calories with 25 calories from fat. There was only 150 milligrams of sodium, 60 milligrams of potassium, 8 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, 7 grams of sugars, and only 1 gram of protein. Considering that almonds are nuts and since nuts are in the protein food group I was quite surprised to see that there was only one gram of protein. It was refreshing to see that product was low in sodium and many find comfort that it is lower in calories. Also, the almond milk listed 45% for calcium, which is significantly more than what you find in traditional regular, soy, and rice milks. Also listed was 10% for vitamin A and zinc, 4% for iron, magnesium, and manganese, 25% for vitamin D and riboflavin, 50% for vitamin E and Vitamin B 12, and 2% for copper. Overall everything looked good.

I cannot help but wonder if losing the amount of protein that I get from soy milk is not a problem. Low protein was one of the reasons that I started getting soy over rice milk. I will admit that it is nice to reduce the amount of soy in our diet, since in addition to soy milk we have it in a number of vegetarian products we eat. For now we are drinking almond milk, but I imagine that from time to time we will get soy milk again for the protein. Silk PureAlmond Original Flavor Almond Milk is about the same price as soy milk and is made in the USA. I would recommend for anyone to try it.
