Silver Asian Carp Breaks Boy's Jaw

Chinese "Flying Carp" Knocks 15-Year-Old Unconcious

Last week we had an invasion of spiders. Apparently this week it's going to be fish, Silver Asian carp to be exact.

TimesoftheInternet is reporting that 15-year-old Seth Russell of Crossett, Arkansas is sporting a broken jaw because of a Silver Asian carp. Apparently this fish likes to jump.

As the article goes on to say, Russell was in an inner tube being pulled by a boat when the fish smacked him. Apparently, according to Seth's mom, he was knocked unconscious and doesn't even remember the event.

The site where this took place is Lake Chicot. The population of this fish has been growing and as a result many other people have been mentioning interactions with the Silver Asian carp. The fish was imported in the 1970's to help with algae removal to aid catfish farmers.

As with many creatures that are not native to an area, the indigent population is finding them a little bit unnerving to deal with.

In my home city of Peoria, we live on the Illinois River. Many years ago in the mid 1960s baby alligators were sold at pet stores along with baby turtles.

Unfortunately, the little tikes didn't make good pets. They occasionally liked to take a little nip at their owner's finger. Their punishment often was a free ride down the toilet where they ended up in the Illinois River. The chemicals utilized for waste treatment only seemed to make them stronger and it wasn't long before a couple were sighted heading toward the old Mississippi River a la Godzilla.

Of course alligators didn't perform any real function like removing algae. On the other hand, they didn't leap out of the water and break your jaw either.

The Silver Asian carp is from China. As previously noted, since it is a "filter feeder," it diets on algae and therefore was valuable to catfish farmers who began importing them in the 1970's.

The Silver Asian carp can reach 40 pounds.

The Silver Asian carp has also been called the "flying carp" based on its tendency to jump up to ten feet out of the water when startled.
