During my search locally though, I couldn't find any groups that I could join. Simi Valley has three MOM's Clubs in the city but they're hard to join and provide little to no feedback on joining. Plus there are fees as well as participation requirements. Honestly I didn't want play dates to feel like an obligation rather than what they should be, fun. Also I happened to live in an area in Simi Valley that the three MOMS' Clubs didn't cover so I wouldn't have even been able to join.
At first I searched every group site online in the hopes that someone had created a group. Although I did find several groups, I found that those groups were no longer together or active and thus didn't fit my needs. Finally in my last ditch effort I found a group on Meetup.com called Simi Valley/Moorpark Hip Mamas N' Papas Meetup Group. When I joined it was a relatively small group with children ranging from five months old to 2 years old.
What attracted me to the group was the fact that they had weekly events at different times a day. There is always something to do that works for every time schedule. We have weekly walks twice a week, weekly evening play dates at the park or a members home, a monthly farm trip to The Underwood Family Farms, monthly craft days, Mom's Night Out and family event day as well. There are typically forty plus events on the calendar any given month. We actively encourage Papas to be active as well, which is different than the other clubs I encountered which discourage fathers from coming to activities. And last but not least, there are no dues to be part of the group!
In addition to meeting in person we have a message board where we can communicate during times we're not meeting. This allows us to give each other advice on the spot should we need it. We also have a section to show off our children and the pictures we take at each event. The site has many informative pages explaining what to do in Simi Valley and Moorpark to help parents find suggestions for things to do when there isn't a meetup but they want to get out.
Everyone in the group is very nice and a pleasure to be around. We enjoy meeting new people and strive to make them feel welcome when they join. Most of our members are active in the group and we see them almost weekly.
Simi Valley/Moorpark Hip Mamas N' Papas Meetup Group will be a year old on September 12, 2007 and currently has nearly fifty active members. We're growing bigger and bigger and as we grow we're meeting more great people which hopefully will develop into lifelong friendships.
