We live in an increasingly politically correct society and I am not so sure that is a good thing. Everywhere I look people are putting a filter on what they are really trying to say. Politicians are afraid to tell the truth about anything, CEOs are afraid to say they tanked the first quarter and teachers are afraid to say that parents suck at raising kids today.
I bet if our nation's founders had been like this we would still be drinking tea and have horrible teeth. I can just see Thomas Jefferson penning our "Declaration of Maybe We Should Do This". In today's world, no one wants to stand up and make their statement about what they believe is wrong and even if they did say it, I doubt they would take any action.
Until this year I had not watched American Idol and I regret missing the first five seasons. I know that when my girlfriend turns it on every week there will be at least one person I cannot wait to hear from. It is sad to say, but I think Simon is my new celebrity hero.
Simon is the one person I see on TV that comes out and tells it like it is. If a contestant has a horrible performance he is not afraid to flat out tell them. He does not sugar coat the fact that they sucked that night and no longer deserve to be on the show. I tire of hearing Randy and Paula search for something cute to say about a performance that my four year old nephew could have done better.
I am not saying we should all just say the first things that come to mind but maybe we need a little more balls behind what we say. I know that Simon comes off as being mean but that is only because we have all been brainwashed to think people should not share their honest opinion. We would rather hear what we want to hear than what needs to be said.
I am all for uplifting people in any way possible but sometimes the only way for someone to truly improve is to see where they lack first. Try this one time today and see the response you get when you tell someone the unedited truth. You may get punched in the face but you may just change someone's life.
