Simon Cowell's Salary Impresses Diddy Enough to Want to Be an American Idol Judge

Valerie Ferrari
"I found out how much that boy makes a week," Sean "Diddy" Combs told MTV News, speaking about how ever since he spoke to Simon Cowell's business manager, his interest in becoming an American Idol judge has definitely been piqued. More than piqued. Diddy wants everybody to get on Twitter, MySpace and Facebook and promote him for the spot that Simon Cowell is leaving open on "American Idol."

Diddy isn't exactly hurting for money. He has worn many hats in the music world, and also designed his own fashions and produced reality shows. He has been in movies like "Monster's Ball" (2001) and "A Raisin in the Sun" (2008) and is about to star in the upcoming comedy, "Get Him to the Greek." All that, yet when he found out what Simon Cowell's been making, Diddy was blown away:

"I have been fronting all this time, trying to act like I don't want that spot .... I am praying right now to 'American Idol,' " Diddy told MTV News, saying he would bring ratings.

"I'm tired of being cool: That number that Simon was getting a week is ridiculous. I can't even be cool with that. Please, can I have the job, whoever's in charge of giving that job?"

But just to make sure they don't think he's begging for the job at any price, he added: "There's no negotiating the contract, just change the name on the check, and I'll be there."

Sean "Diddy" Combs own fortune was estimated to be $346 million net (yes, net - not gross) in 2006, so that must be some eye-popping figure that Simon Cowell has been getting.

But would Diddy make a good replacement for Cowell? Diddy has all the arrogance of Simon Cowell. Diddy knows how to sell both good and bad music.

I did watch a few episodes of the first season of "I Want to Work for Diddy," mainly because I wanted to see the season trouble-maker, Kim "Poprah" Kearney get eliminated. In the episode "Show Me the Monae," Diddy fired Poprah himself without waiting for the judges to eliminate her because he got fed up with her 'tude. I don't remember him being particularly nasty about it, just authoritative. So I don't know if Diddy can match Simon Cowell for brutal reviews, but out of the other possibiities I've heard so far, like Perez Hilton or Howard Stern, I'd vote for Diddy.

Show him the money, the same money as Simon Cowell, or it's "a deal-breaker."

I don't follow him on Twitter so this one definitely slipped my radar. I can't tolerate that "I want to work for Diddy" show. I glanced at one episode, and it looked corny. But Diddy can definitely be nasty. I watched all but the first season of "Making the Band," and I remember him telling D Woods, "Are you feeling a little thick?" and something about laying off the hamburgers. I thought that was SUPER tacky. He told Q that he got in "by the skin of your teeth." So yes, he can definitely match Simon. The only thing is I always agreed with Simon. I rarely agree with Diddy so I don't know about this one. I'm in awe of that $346 million net though.

FWIW I'd pick P-Diddy over Cowell or Paula-- Diddy has a funny style arrogance--those others just have plain b-flat arrogance and they not that much.... I think Diddy would bring in a broader audience--I might even watch it....

That would probably be a pretty good fit, but I'd love to see Paula come back. Nice write-up.

"Idol" should save their money. Paula and Simon were the best part of the show. With him now gone, the show has now run it's course.

My guess is they want someone who'll take less, salaries like that are unsustainable especially if ratings go down and advertisers bail.

According to various internet sources, Cowell's salary is somewhere between $41 and $144 million, which begs the question, why do we jump on athletes for what they make. This guy seems to be making at least $41 million for making what isn't even a year's worth of snarky comments. (Oh, and by the way, I have an Alex Rodriguez first card I'm willing to sell now.)

thank Shannon, alas, these spammers are like termites. Maybe they could just do without the "didn't care if your feelings were hurt" aspect. Imo, there were lots of times when I didn't think Simon meant what he said and was just being a d*ck for the hell of it. But it will be better if they don't try to replace him and let a new judge bring their own uniqueness to Idol so we won't have to have endless Simon comparisons.
