I'm on medications, one of the side effects is occasional constipation. I tried taking laxatives, which didn't work. Add to that the fact that I just hate the idea of taking another medication to offset the side effects of another one. It just didn't make good sense to me. So I loaded my arsenal with a list of natural alternatives.
I have tried these all at some point in time over the last few years. They've all worked for me to varying degrees, so your mileage may vary. I highly suggested only trying one remedy in a 24 hour period, you don't want to get things moving too quickly.
My grandmother always told me to eat prunes, and she was right. Eat 3-4 before bed or when you have time in the afternoon and wait for the magic. This is something my grandmother believed in without fail. I thought it was silly, but I tried it and it worked.
Eat your fruits. Mangoes, apples, pears, papayas, and oranges. These can all go a long way in helping your bowels to start moving again. Drinking just the juices will help also.
Eat a tablespoon of dark brown syrup and follow it with glass of cold water. This is a very simple and quick way to get things moving.
A cup of green tea with honey added. This works great for most people. I have friends that swear by it, though it didn't work well for me.
Have a cup of coffee. Coffee has a laxative effect for a lot of people. Of course if you already drink a lot of coffee every day, it may not have much of an effect on you.
Psyllium husks. They're high in fiber which can get things moving. They also have a cleansing effect in the bowels. If after a few days of taking these, things are moving, stop taking them. They can sometimes make things worse.
Fresh lemon juice. Don't use the bottled stuff, juice a lemon. Try half a lemon at first and be ready to cut back if needed. This can really get things moving, a little too much.
Honey. As far as laxatives go, this one is very mild. Just mix a tablespoon or 2 in hot water and drink. If you want to increase it's effectiveness, mix in an equal amount of apple cider vinegar. The taste can take a little getting use to, but it's worth it.
All of these are simple fixes to help when things aren't going well. Some of them will work better then others. If after 7 day, you are still getting no relief, I highly suggest seeing your doctor. The problem could be caused by an underlying medical condition.
Give them a try, I hope they help.
