The number one common attribute that top poker players have is patience. It is never a good idea to force a hand that begins with bad opening cards. Learn what a good opening hand is, and if a specific set of cards does not qualify, fold out of the hand and wait for a better one. It is always better to lose a little and wait for a chance to win, rather than push the issue and lose a substantial amount more. If the opening hand is not good, be patient and wait for one.
The second common attitude that all good poker players have is that they are very aggressive players. Once a good opening hand is dealt, bid the pot up. Many people that play poker are passive, and do not want to lose a large sum of money, so if a good hand is held be aggressive. Never be a passive player that loses due to being scared.
One of the most basic concepts that needs to be learned, and followed, is to understand that sometimes a player just has to fold. As stated before, never push a bad or mediocre hand. If a player at the table shows that they have a better hand, and that there is no way to beat it, fold. Once again, it is better to lose a little money rather than a lot.
Along with this basic concept is the idea that every good player must know when to leave the table. If a player has won a decent amount of money get up and walk away. Never push forward in the hopes that even more money can be won. Sometimes the player may earn more winnings, but as a general rule the luck of the table will shift, and the winning player has a good chance of becoming the losing player.
The final strategy that all successful players follow is to analyze the table and the players that are at the table. The majority of people have what is known as a tell, and they play by using the same types of patterns. Learn the players at the table, decide how each of them, including the dealer, plays the game, and win. Being able to judge what the other players will do is just as important as being able to guess at what cards are left and the chance that specific ones will come into play during the hand.
These basic poker strategies will elevate the game of any player, whether they are just beginning or they have been playing for some time. Remember that this is in fact, just a game, so follow the basic tips given, learn the game, and most importantly, have fun. Do not become dependant on poker earnings because the majority of people can not earn a living by playing. Poker is simply a way to have fun while offering a chance to earn a few extra bucks.
