This simple candy cane ornament craft project is a great for children as young as 4 years old to teenagers. Simple shapes made of Styrofoam and tissue paper makes this a very affordable Christmas craft for large groups of kids.

To Make a Simple Candy Cane Christmas Tree Ornament you Will Need:

Sheet of 1 inch thick Styrofoam
White gross grain ribbon (1 inch thick)
Thin red ribbon (1/4 inch wide)
Straight pins
Scissors
Toothpick or marker
Plastic knife (or real knife)

The first steps to trace out your candy cane shape on the Styrofoam. The kids can do this with a magic marker or even a tooth pick. Encourage them to go ahead a dry to make their candy can at least 5 to 6 inches tall. This way it can be seen on the Christmas tree.

Now, using a plastic knife has the kids cut out their candy cane. Styrofoam is so easy to cut even a plastic knife will work its way through it with no problem. Older kids could use a real knife if you want them to.

Do not worry about any rough edges because the ribbon will cover it up.

Now, you are going to need long pieces of ribbon. I recommend at least 5 feet. You can cut off the extra this way.

Now, start at the base of the candy cane. Hold your ribbon end to the bottom of the candy cane. Push a straight pin in to hold it in place.

Now, start wrapping the white gross grain ribbon around the candy cane. You want to work at an angle. You also want to cover any of the Styrofoam so it is not visible.

Once you reach the tip of the curved hook on the candy cane use a straight pin to again attach the ribbon to the Styrofoam. Cut off any extra white ribbon with the scissor. Now, pull out the pin, tuck the enough end of the ribbon under a replace the straight pen.

Now, starting at the Curved tip and place the end of your red ribbon on the tip. Push a straight pin in to hold it in place.

Start wrapping the thin red ribbon around the candy cane, just like the creal thing. You want to space it out so the white can show through.

When you reach the bottom end of the candy cane use a straight pin to attach it the end. Cut off any extra red ribbon with the scissors.

Now, take a 12 inch piece of your red ribbon. Push a straight pin straight though the middle.

Now, tie a bow with this ribbon. The bow should be on top of the needle. Cut any extra ribbon of the ends of the bow.

Press this red bow into the top of your Christmas candy cane ornament.

Now, use your ornament hook and loop it through some of the white ribbon wrapped around the candy cane. You want it to be near the bow so it looks like the bow is supporting the ornament hook.

You are finished!!

For a little fun with this simple candy can dormant you could also turn it into a simple Christmas tree garland. Use a tapestry needle to thread the candy canes together running through their stems.
