Simple and Cheap Summer Fun

Summer fun doesn't have to be expensive. In fact, summer fun doesn't have to cost anything. Here are some cheap yet enriching summer activities that can be done as a family. Summer fun doesn't need to be overly complicated either. Make memories this summer, and save money as well. Disconnect from modern living with these simple and cheap ideas for summer fun. Creativity not included.

Backyard Astronomy - Looking at the stars is fun! Refresh your knowledge of constellations, seek out satellites, maybe catch a meteor shower, and find a new nebula. There are many ways to enjoy the night sky, and it can cost a lot or be free. The stars are there, all thats needed is for you to look up. Print off a map of the night sky if constellation knowledge is rusty. There are many free ones available, or you can check books and maps out of your local library.

Cloud Gazing - How many years has it been since you laid on your back and saw the shapes of the clouds? Gather the family for this fun activity, and see what's up there. Make a game out of seeing the most animals, plants or fantasy creatures. Children in particular love this game, and best of all, its free. Try different places in the backyard or switch to the front yard. Anyone can lay down. Use lounge chairs if the ground is too hard or getting up is an issue. Pillows and blankets can make it even more fun!

Community Events - Many communities have free or very low cost events during the summer months. Keep an eye on your local papers, as well as local announcement boards. This works even if you live in a small rural community. My town holds a field day every year,as do surrounding towns. Its a good way of getting out and meeting your neighbors. Take a chance on something outside of the norm.

Learn Something New - Learning doesn't have to cost much, if anything. Take books out of your local library, search for information online, or just go outside and explore. Have each member of the family pick a topic they want to learn about this summer, and plan around it. If a member of the family already knows about a certain topic, why not have them teach it to an interested party? Go to museums, local events, take a walk outside, or even around the neighborhood. Be creative!
