Simple and Cost-Effective Spring Decorating

As cool mornings melt into warm afternoons, we begin to feel the charm of something familiar - Spring! As we throw open the windows and turn back to our homes, we sigh. Dreary reminders of winter loom about. The heavy coats still hang on the rack next to scarves and hats. The boots and closed-toe shoes still line the hallway or closet floor. Perhaps we have yet to remove those winter themed dish-towels and oven mitts from the kitchen. Indoors isn't the only place we find winter reminders. That bag of ice melt still sits next to the shovels near the porch, and the old welcome mat wears thin from salt and ice. Living in perpetual winter isn't an option. Try these 5 simple and cost-effective suggestions for Spring decorating to create a look and feel inside your home that reflects the season:

Spring Decorating Tip #1: Remove those winter reminders.
The bulky coats and salt-stained boots need a place to hibernate. Removing visual reminders of colder months can dramatically improve the weather both in and out of our homes. Move the shovels to the garage or basement. Many dry-cleaners offer affordable summer storage for your winter coats and sweaters.
Plastic storage containers will keep those hats, scarves and gloves out of sight and in one place through the warmer months, and will easily fit on a shelf in the closet.

Spring Decorating Tip #2: Change the window dressing.
Purchase a pastel or neutral set of sheers for your windows. Many discount stores carry off-the-shelf options that can add color and style to your home. Highlighting the windows in your home adds interest and light at low cost.

Spring Decorating Tip #3: Incorporate nature.
Add fresh cut flowers in white or crystal vases to your end-tables. Find lush green potted plants to sit under the window. This adds color and life to any room. Springtime is the perfect time to buy plants at low cost. Home and garden stores offer a fabulous variety of plants at affordable prices. Just be sure to provide proper light and water. If you're not a 'green-thumb,' ask the retailer for recommendations for plants that don't require a lot of maintenance.

Spring Decorating Tip #4: Dress up your table.
Remove bulky centerpieces and replace them with flowers or interesting glassware that reflects light. New table linens in spring colors and patterns create an instant make-over for your table.

Spring Decorating Tip #5: Spruce up your sitting area.
Fold those throws and put them off to the side of the sofa or chair. If you're crafty, purchase fabric to create spring colored covers for your throw pillows. If sewing isn't your forte, you can often find a wide selection of throw pillows at discount stores.

Number 2 is great. I learned from my grandmother that one should change window dressing both in the spring and in the fall. I think it really does make a difference.

Great tips! My husband and I are moving into our first home very soon and I'm sure these tips will be very handy when I begin to decorate.
