Simple DIY T-shirt Nightgown Craft

How to Make a Comfortable Nightgown from Extra T-shirts

David Farrell
Here is an easy craft where a comfortable nightgown can be made out of two T-shirts. This craft is a great way to recycle T-shirts that are old or are too big.

For the recycled T-shirt nightgown craft, you need the following craft materials:

Two old T-shirts, preferably large size, of matching colors.

Scissors

Sewing kit

Refer to this T-shirt nightgown craft slideshow for photographs.

Recycled T-shirt nightgown craft step #1, craft preparations:

Select for the top of the nightgown a T-shirt, preferably the smaller of the two. For a long sleeved nightgown, a long sleeved T-shirt can be used. Sleeves can be cut to any specific length or cut completely off. Cut edges will curl over rather than fray, so no hemming is needed for maximum comfort. Refer to How to make a sleeveless shirt for detailed instructions.

Recycled T-shirt nightgown craft step #2, measure the second T-shirt:

Put on the first T-shirt then measure the distance from the bottom to the desired nightgown length. Using the entire second T-shirt makes a long nightgown. It can also be cut in half and used for a second nightgown.

Recycled T-shirt nightgown craft step #3, cutting the second T-shirt:

Lay the second T-shirt out flat, so the sides line up. For a three quarters T-shirt length, cut straight across the T-shirt from the bottom of the sleeve to the other sleeve. For a half or full T-shirt length, turn inside out and cut the sleeves off, following a straight line from the side up into the sleeve rather than follow the seam. Cut across the top of the T-shirt from the top of the sleeve to make a square. Sew together the cut edges of the sleeve to make a tube. For a half length, fold the tube in half and cut.

Recycled T-shirt nightgown craft step #4, finishing the nightgown:

The tube of T-shirt material is now sewn to the bottom of the T-shirt. If one piece of cloth is wider, take a tuck in either side, sewing off a triangle of cloth. If hiding the stitches is desired, the cloth can be sewn to only the inside of the hem on T-shirt #1, although this process takes longer. You now have a homemade T-shirt nightgown.

The sleeves of the second T-shirt can be recycled as headbands or other crafts. Sweatshirts or hoodies can be used for winter nightgowns. Refer to Make fleece pajamas from hoodies for hoodie alteration ideas.
