Decide how much rice to cook. A cup of rice is enough for two persons. Use a rule of a thumb if you plan to cook for more people.
Put the rice in a pot and fill it with water. It is best to cook rice in a deep pot. The rice can expand easily and no water flowing out during cooking. Wash it and then drain the water by using a strainer. You may keep the water and use it to water plants; it contains a lot of minerals. Repeat the process until the water is not cloudy anymore. Normally, it takes about three to four washes before achieving this.
Fill the pot with water. The ratio is one cup of rice to one and half cups of water. Even though, different types of rice require different amount of water, you may not fail with the ratio given.
Cook the rice uncovered over a medium heat. Cook the rice until it reaches boiling point. Bring the heat down to low .Let the rice boils and simmers until it absorbs most of the water. At this point, you have to watch it closely.
Cover the pot. Cook for another two minutes. Check the rice by tasting some. If it is still not cook, there is a crunchy feeling when you bite it, add more water. For a cup of rice, you add another half cup of water. Cover it again and let it cook for another two minutes.
When the rice is cooked, I suggest you to fluff it up by using a fork. With this method, you can cook almost all types of rice on top of a stove.
Be creative when cooking rice. You may substitute water with chicken stock, add garlic, a spoon of oil, and two drops of pandan leaf essence (optional) and salt, to make Chinese Chicken Rice. You can serve it with Roasted Chicken or Steamed Chicken, chicken broth, light soy sauce, chilli sauce and few slices of cucumber or lettuce as side dishes.
It is advisable to have an electric rice cooker if you consume it quite often. Even though, you do not have to be by the rice cooker during the cooking process, you still need to perform the pre-cooking process works.
