Simple, Effective Ways to Properly Clean Cement

You may have a driveway that is in much need of a good cleaning, or just a patch of cement in your backyard that would look much better with a good scrubbing. Whatever the case may be, you want to get that cement looking as good as when it was new. To get this job done, all you need is some simple materials and some good old fashion elbow grease. Here are some simple, effective ways to properly clean cement so you can get on with whatever the day holds for you.

Collect your cement cleaning materials

To get this project on its way you will need some simple materials, along with some muscle power and patience.

Bleach, most preferably the chlorine-free bleach
Liquid laundry detergent
Warm water
Clean bucket
Scrub brush, not the type that you wash dishes with
Rubber gloves
Optional: An old toothbrush, for small hard to reach places

Safely mixing the cleaning solution

Take the clean bucket and fill it up about two-thirds full of warm water, along with approximately four capfuls of bleach. Add the same amount of the liquid detergent as the bleach, approximately four capfuls. Mix the solution carefully so it doesn't spill and splash all over the place.

Make sure that you are wearing old clothing that you don't mind getting dirty and wet, because this project could get messy.

Time to start cleaning the cement

Take the scrub brush and soak it in the cleaning solution so it is nice and soapy. Now you can start scrubbing the dirty cement. This task isn't going to be easy at some points. It really depends on how large the area is that needs cleaning. If it's a large area, you will of course need more time, but for a smaller area, not so much.

To rinse the cement that you have just cleaned, you can either rinse the cement with a hose, or you can use the bucket filled with water. Use whichever way that would be easier for you.

If the section that you have just finished cleaning is a smaller area, you can use old towels or a hair dryer to help dry the cement. But if it is a larger area, just plain old time will suffice.
